Poll question: Do you pay any attention to the number of posts people have? |

Just curious, it seems to have been brought up a lot lately.

3. No. I pay attention to how people treat me. Here is a great example. |
|
PassingFair is a very good friend of mine and a DUer as well. She found DU first and told me about it. She was a registered member for months before I signed up.
Our post counts?
MrsGrumpy=11,000 something
PassingFair=700 something
And she's been here longer. There are many people who only feel compelled to post sporadically. Then there's me, who can't keep my mouth shut. ;)

Edited on Tue Jul-13-04 11:25 AM by POed_Ex_Repub
It's like the satisfaction surveys they give you after you take a class.. On a scale of 1 to 5.. you get the people who answer 3 across the board.
The question starts with "Do you pay ANY attention..." there is no ambiguity, hence the binary poll.
Note: Edited for punctuation

23. No... I don't think there is a "right" answer... however... |
|
I had a feeling that if I put a "sometimes".. the results would look like this...
Yes ===> 4 Sometimes ===> 137 No ===> 3
Which doesn't do much to answer my question. (Yes, I know, technically that would make for 4 yes's and 140 No's taking my poll strictly in the way I defined it, however, with the binary poll I get a better idea of Duer's inclinations)

20. Realizing that I do not have many posts, |
|
I can say that I've read a lot of posts of people who seem to post a comment or not just to, seemingly, kick up the number of their posts. I've seen and read timely, thoughtful comments on a number of issues. I have also seen a number of inane marks, such as ???, or "kick," or "hmmmm's," or something of that nature. It just seems as tho' those "marks" are made just to increase the number of "posts" they have. Just my opinion. Means nothing to no one except me.

36. imo there are many reasons ... |
|
why a poster does the inane things you describe. kick, for example is purposely done to keep a thread alive. personally, i feel no sense of urgency to increase my number of posts. however, i do respond with such inane things as "me too", or "i agree" when someone says the same thing i was going to say. i also say the inane "good post" when i spot a well reasoned, and well written post. nothing wrong with letting a poster know that someone is reading his post, as i am doing now.

21. Occasionally, If the post is interesting, (pos OR neg) and |
|
I don't recognize the poster's handle- kinda like "hmmm, why haven't I noticed you before?" If it's a low (like 2-digit) # I'll usually offer a DU welcome.
Aside from that, I learned a looooongggg time ago that quantity, quality and longevity do NOT necessarily go hand in hand... in hand, and that those who attempt to convey an elitist attitude based on something so silly... well, they probably shouldn't. I have on occasion politely pointed this out to a member with, say, 200-300 posts over the past month, who flames a newbie due to their low numbers.
But that's okay because I do it. :evilgrin:

26. This is going to sound awful... |
|
but when I see people that have tens of thousands of posts (and brag about it), it makes me wonder what they are doing with their lives to find the time to post that much. Do they have jobs, families, get out of the house, get some fresh air and exercise, actually work on a campaign or register people to vote, etc.? I know deep down that they do, but it makes me wonder. I worry that the more that DU becomes a home for people who post tens of posts per day and attack people that do not post at that rate, the more that DU will resemble an echo chamber. Just my opinion. Please don't hit me.

employees...I make a great living..I care for my 78 yo mother..I have friends, I have worked on statewide campaigns for 22 years until last October, and I read over 400 pps of legal documents per day, and many DU'ers know me personally.
I remember once you posted about prejudice...it is always worthwhile to evaluate one's own assumptions in the matter.
As for the number of posts someone has, of course I notice it but don't use it as a litmus test for their value here.
I use the content of their posts to assess that.

40. Post count is a very bad indicator |
|
I've been here for years and still haven't cracked 1000 posts yet. Does the fact that I lurk more than I post make my opinions any less valid or my knowledge any less valuable?
New members are the lifeblood of any online community, and without them a discussion board is destined to eventually die. If you discriminate or discount the opinions of new members, they will simply leave and this website will be worse off for it. I've seen enough trolls here over the years to understand why some people may be biased, but bias in ANY form should be unpalatable to any true liberal.

Typically, I start with a thread title; if it intrigues, I will give it a look. If it seems iffy, I will see who started the thread. There are posters whose opinions and such I respect more than others, so that is a secondary way to determine if I may want to read a thread.
Within a thread, I generally just read posts without noting who posted what; stopping to take note of who wrote something I find either insightful or insipid. I don't make lists of who said what, but over time I start to recognize names that way. If I don't recognize the poster I will take a glance at their post count.
But any post I reply to is shaped by the content of that post, and I am not one of those who will be harsh with someone else based on their post count. I try not to be harsh with any one.It's easier to just ignore the insipid posts.
Usually I notice number of posts based on some one else posting a "welcome to DU" post to some one else, at which point I notice that that person is fairly new.
