TOCOI, Fla. -- A retired Jacksonville businessman drowned when his foot got entangled with his seat when he fell from a boat and his wife was unable to keep his head above water, officials said.
James R. Tharin Sr. had taken a boat out into the St. Johns River behind his home Monday afternoon to check the motor. Returning to dock, Tharin, 77, fell from his flat-bottom fishing boat into the water, wedging his foot beneath a seat as he fell, St. Johns County Deputy Sheriff Greg Suchy said.
Tharin's wife, Natalie, ran from the couple's house and jumped into the water after hearing his calls for help.
"She was in like 10 feet of water treading water," Suchy said. "She had to leave him to try and get help."
She tried unsuccessfully to pry her husband's foot loose with a paddle.
