Iraqi Cat Reunited With G.I. War Buddies

POSTED: 11:36 am EDT July 13, 2004

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Saving Pfc. Hammer became a mission for Fort Carson Staff Sgt. Rick Bousfield of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team.

Pfc. Hammer is an Iraqi tabby cat the unit adopted after he was born last fall at a base in Balad, Iraq, 50 miles north of Baghdad. When Bousfield found out his unit was leaving Iraq in March, he decided he couldn't leave a member of his team behind.

3. Tabby cats are named after a neighborhood in Baghdad
"The word comes from French tabis, which was earlier atabis, and in medieval Latin attabi. The original origin of the word seems to be from the Attabiyah section of Baghdad where a type of striped silk was made that was later used to describe cats."
