Yes, sir
I have a friend who speaks German. He's the one who tipped me off to what they're saying. Also, there is an English version of "Du Hast" on their CD.

12. You have to listen to the entire verse.
it isn't "hate" but "have" and "asked". Remember, German dosen't have a sencence structure like English. The verbs are going to appear in places we don't expect them.

13. German just sound angry. Like Arabic and Turkish.
French sounds like silk and sex even when you are cussing someone out. Latin is poetic.

16. English sounds wonderful...
...when it is spoken properly. We quit doing that about 70 years ago though. You really do need a broad vocabulary to make any language sound right. Most people don't go to the trouble.

You
You Have
You have me
You have asked me a question
and I have given no answer

German is one of my languages.

Will you until death does sever
Be upright to her forever

No

Will you ’til death be her rider
Her lover too, to stay inside her

No

if the 'H' is capitalized or not. the english translation is available on the rammstein website as i recall.

edited to say, i just went over there and the whole place has changed... AGAIN! no lyrics to be found...

but this site is interesting... don't know if the guy knows what he's talking about though.

10. It's also the context of the rest of the verse.
it goes on to use gefragt and his lack of response. The video, of course, would make one think they are talking about hate.

The lyrics for Enigma's "Sadness" are also very interesting.

11. verbs are never capitalized in German, so I don't think that would matter
I'm pretty sure DarkPhenyx's translation is correct, because there is a verb participle (verlasst or verlacht?) at the end of the clause. That's how you form past tense in German. Usually.

Edited on Wed Jul-14-04 08:25 AM by Beware the Beast Man
Where they say "you hate," not "you have." Perhaps they tweaked the lyrics for this English remix version.

ON EDIT- Aha! It was the Matrix sountrack version! Here's a link to the lyrics:

20. The soundtrack I have does not have an English translation.
Where did you get it? Interesting.

They may well have tweaked it, or it could be a bad translation. Weird.

22. well stuff like this would probably have to be tweaked a bit.
syllables, phrasing, and rhyming is a pretty common problem when translating a song. that or they might have wanted to incorporate some lyrics that were more fitting of the aggressive instrumentals of the song.

23. Which would be why...
...even when I don't speak the language, I listen to music in it's "native" language. If I really want to know I'll look up a translation. :)

Are you implying, however, that you can't have an acid rock love song? ;-)

21. Ergo the English version sucks ;-)
Edited on Wed Jul-14-04 08:37 AM by Kellanved
German hassen (English "to hate") is spelled with two 's' in the middle.
i.e. ich hasse, Du hasst/haßt,...

It is a play of words, but the word actually used in the lyrics is "hast", second person present of "haben", English "to have" (used as an auxiliary).

:hi:

is what it means. :D

Good morning Kellenved. :hi:

edit: Yet another reason why I prefer to listen to a song in the original language. The artist's meaning gets changed.
