Questions re getting satellite radio in car
Sure would like to listen to AAR in my car, but don't have satellite radio. How does one get it in the car....do you have to go to your dealer for expensive install, or can you order something off the internet and install it yourself....what are the options and expenses? Thanks

1. Not to hard to do
Most of the big electronic stores sell satellite radio adaptors that require little installation. They're not too expensive either. I believe under a hundred dollars. Then it's 9 dollars a month to subscribe.

2. My husband installed it himself.
Involved putting an antenna on the roof (very small bump thingie) and plugging an adapter into the tape player (there are also wireless ones)....its pretty easy.

You should be able to order the stuff and put it in yourself. No expensive or permanent install needed.

Good luck!

3. I had XM Radio installed
in my car to listen to AAR. The radio and installation cost $225.00. The monthy cost is $9.99. Had trouble with the AM/FMcar radio after that and had to go to my car dealership to get it fixed. They worked with the place I bought and had the radio installed. All in all alot easier than doing it yourself. The only draw back w/ XM radio is they don't carry the same schedule as AAR. Sirus radio does but costs a few bucks more a month. Hope that helps.

4. Both XM and Sirius have plug & play units
Edited on Wed Jul-14-04 12:24 PM by Beware the Beast Man
Say what you want about XM (they are partly owned by Clear Channel), but Delphi makes a plug & play unit called the Roady, which plugs into your cigarette adapter and cassette deck (an FM adapter is also available if you have no tape player). At $119 it's also the cheapest unit out there. I got one for my wife for Christmas, and she loves it.

Now if it's AAR you want, I recommend Sirius. They carry AAR in its entirety. XM has America Left, but butchers some of the programming (this is true of most of XM's talk channels). The downside of Sirius is that their equipment is slightly more expensive.

5. Delphi Roady--99 bucks at Best Buy, easy to install yourself if you
also get the FM modulator, which when I bought it, was free w/ the pirchase. May still be.

6. It's very easy to use.
I bought the Sirius brand with the "FM" option. No wires to connect to the radio, just plug it into the cig plug for power, place the ant. on the roof and ola. I even use it in rental cars, just place the tuner on the seat of floor.

7. On my satellite radio (XM)
it's not actually Air America Radio, it's called America Left. So it has the Al Franken show, and the Janeane Garafalo show, but it doesn't have the exact lineup as Air America. Just so you know.
