What Is Your Record In Predicting Presidential Elections? |
|
I'm 0-2 so far in my brief politically-active life.
I voted for Bob Dole in 1996 (back when I didn't know politics and voted just for the fun of it).
And I voted for Ralph Nader in 2000 (back when I knew a little more, but not nearly as much as I do now).
I'm hoping I don't go 0-3 this year, becuase that would really, really, suck.
How about you?

3. In predicting elections, I'm 3 for 3... |
|
... picked Clinton, Clinton, and Gore.. all won.
In terms of voting, though, I wasn't old enough to vote in '92, voted for Nader in '96, and Gore in '00.

You're 0-2 like me.

12. "What Is Your Record In Predicting Presidential Elections?" |
|
You mean the year before the election like now?
I predicted:
1976 Kennedy (0-1) -even though he said he wouldn't run. 1980 Kennedy (0-2) -even though he hadn't yet decided. 1984 Kennedy (0-3) -see 1976 (notice a trend? I was hard-headed in my youth & loved the Kennedys.) 1988 Hart (0-3) -most of the young folk probably don't remember Donna Rice 1992 Bush (0-4) -Bill who, Governor of where!? (I thought Cuomo would be our guy and lose) 1996 Clinton (1-4) -of course. 2000 Gore (2-4 or 1-5...) -well, you know that story.
Now if you talk about predicting the outcome after the conventions, I predicted them all correctly (or not, see 2000).
Actual voting - I've always voted Democratic for president, since '84 when I reached voting age, so you know how that went.

72 - McGovern
76 - Carter
80 - Carter
84 - Mondale
88 - Dukakis
92 - Perot
96 - Perot
00 - Gore
The only winner I've had was Carter in '76.
However, I was not dissapointed that Clinton won in '92 and '96 and would have voted that way if it looked like he needed the extra vote.

1960 - I wanted JFK - he won 1964 - I wanted Goldwater (because I didn't trust LBJ) - he lost 1968 - I wanted Humphrey (after RFK died) - he lost 1972 - I voted for McGovern - he lost 1976 - I voted for Ford (married to a Republican at the time) - he lost 1980 - I voted for Reagan (BIG mistake) - he won 1984 - I voted for Mondale - he lost 1988 - I voted for Dukakis - he lost 1992 - I voted for Clinton - he won 1996 - I voted for Clinton - he won 2000 - I voted for Gore - he won, but had it stolen from him
So counting Gore, I'm 5 for 11 - batting .454............

21. I'd say I'm 1-1 with an asterisk... |
|
...but only based upon whom I THOUGHT would win, not who I actually would have voted for. I was only 17 during the 2000 election so I haven't actually gotten to vote beyond the 2002 midterms and primaries.
1996 was the first one I was following elections close enough to make a difference. My dad supported Perot while my mom supported Clinton, but we pretty much all assumed a Clinton victory. I might have actually supported Perot back then, though. (Hey, I was in eighth grade... I liked him 'cause he seemed to be rocking the boat.)
In 2000 I was a bigtime Gore supporter, despite coming in a little late in the game to be of much assistance to the campaign, but I assumed Bush was going to prevail by a 5-percent or so margin, popularly and electorally. I guess that has to do with living in Texas; it seemed like just too many people *loved* Shrub for anyone but him to prevail. Imagine my surpise when Gore actually shored up a popular vote victory, while also truly prevailing in the Electoral College when all the votes in Florida were counted. So I give that election an asterisk. I predicted the "winner" in terms of the man who became President, but not in terms of who truly "won" the election minus the intervention of the judicial branch...

The first election I actually remember thinking about was in 1988. I knew Dukakis would lose, and frankly, I don't know how all of you could have missed it, LOL! Was he really the best we had in '88?? I knew Bush would win. Couldn't vote.
In 1992, I had suspicions about the BFEE already, liked Gary Hart, but the Donna Rice thing made me frown frown frown. Anyway, after Arsenio I knew Clinton was my man. After he went on MTV and Poppy Bush didn't, I knew he would win.
In 1996, no brainer. I voted, but I knew I almost didn't have to.
In 2000, I knew there was funny business, because how in the world could Dummy McStupid be polling so high? Bill Bradley is my homeboy, but I knew that Gore would get it and I wanted him to, thought he could win. No one could have predicted what happened, though.

23. Haven't missed one yet. |

I knew Reagan was unstoppable in 84, due to the mythology that still surrounds him (a lesson we must not forget with the chimpnazi's corporate media)
I knew Dukakis didn't have a prayer in 88 - and it made me sick every single day to think of a 12 year BCE White House.
I knew Bill Clinton would win the election the first time I saw him on TV, which was early in the campaign.
1996 - did ANYONE, even Repukes, really think Dole had a chance?
2000 - I predicted that Junior would lie his way into a very close race, but that Gore would win. Unfortunately, I didn't account for a Supreme Court asissted theft :-(
2004 - A Dean/Clark ticket will kick these criminal fascists out of the White House. A Democratic Senate is very possible if the senators currently campaigning do the right thing and withdraw early, if they can't win. We need them in the Senate more than we need a fight over the nomination that will prevent the eventual nominee from building a Rove-proof campaign.
