MLB All Psycho team

LF Alex Johnson was so paranoid he carried a gun with him in the dugout

CF Ty Cobb attacked a parapalegic in the stands for heckling him, killed a mugger on the way to the ballpark and didn't even wait for the police

RF (out of position) Jimmy Piersall for allowing Anthony Perkins to play him in a movie

1B Mike Ivie famous bi polar slugger

2B Billy Martin real anger management issues that bordered on sociopathic

LHP Rube Waddell I can't quite find out from research whether he was mentally ill or mentally disabled but he sure did odd stuff.

C Moe Berg I know he was a genius and a war hero but he was also essentially homeless for the last thirty years of his life and unable to make any human connections

RHP Any Dominican Right Hander (choose from Joaquin "youneverknow" andujar, Pascual "I can't find the off ramp" Perez, Juan "Slugger" Maricahl)

so we need a SS and a third baseman..

3. A few of my Mets heros could make the team
At catcher, my favorite player growing up - Mackey Sasser, who couldn't throw a ball back to the pitcher without one-hopping it. He actually had to throw the ball to the 3rd baseman who threw it to the pitcher.

At 3rd base - Howard Johnson (HoJo) who was a 30-30 man for a few years, then became a born-again Christian and suddenly his career was over. He stopped hitting home runs and stealing bases and he was through.

In Centerfield - Vince Coleman - who threw a lit firecracker at a bunch of kids.

In Leftfeild, Carl Everett - who hated everyone.

Pitching - David Cone, who was caught masterbating in the bullpen at Shea Stadium.

Also Pitching, Brett Saberhagen, who squirted bleech out of a supersoaker at a sports writer.

5. Albert Belle
absolutely HAS to be on this list.

I'd also nominate Steve Blass, who got to the point that he couldn't throw the ball to the plate.

And then there's Chuck Knoblauch, who also for a time couldn't throw (in his case, to first base).

8. I have a theory about Knoblauch
His dad was his coach growing up, and it was when his dad really starting deteriorating from Altzheimers disease that he suddenly couldn't throw to first.

I think there was a psychological connection between his dad no longer being able to watch him play and his inability to throw to first.

6. Steve Sax couldn't throw to first base in the latter part of his career.
Sad, really...that the human brain can do that to such a conditioned athlete like Sax or Chuck Knoblauch.

9. Mark 'the Bird' Fydrich (?sp).
Come on now. He's GOT to be on the team. He talked to the ball between pitches.

Oh, and who's that Cubs pitcher that brushed his teeth between innings?

10. Turk Wendell is a strange one
in the minor leagues, he insisted the umpires roll the ball back to him. He was always careful to jump over the foul lines, and did a whole littany of weird things. He'd stay squatted on the mound till the catcher squatted behind home plate, for instance.

11. The already well-stocked rotation must include...
Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd, reason #84672 that the Sox have STILL not been able to get it done in a generous lifetime.

One never knew whether Al "The Mad Hungarian" Hrabowsky was for real, or just trying to psych out the hitters...

12. The fellow Cobb attacked actually had lost a hand and fingers
rather than being paraplegic (paralyzed from the waist down).

http://www.msn.espn.go.com/endofcentury/s/other/infamous.html

How mean was Ty Cobb? On May 15, 1912, the Tigers were in New York to play the Yankees. A fan named Claude Lueker, who had lost one hand and three fingers on the other in a printing press accident, was heckling Cobb. The two traded insults for a couple of innings. After one exchange, teammate Sam Crawford asked Cobb if he was going to take that. Cobb charged into the grandstand and proceeded to beat and stomp Lueker. When somebody said he has no hands, Cobb shouted, "I don't care if he has no feet."

In any case, Cobb attacked a fan who had a disability. He is also a "twofer" as the captain of the MLB All-Bigot Team, also featuring Alvin Dark in the infield.

18. The fan
called Cobb a 'nigger" that is why Cobb went after him. He was suspended by the league so his teammates struck. the Georgia legislature actually passed a resolution in support of Cobb because "no man should have to suffer such an indignity".

16. Doug Rader
used to play mind games with teamates like rolling up a stick of gum. inserting it in his nose then removing it only to put it in his mouth to chew it.

Dennis Bennet who pitched during 50s-60-s packed a gun wherever he went.

Dick Allen would take his position at 3rd base with a lit cigarette in his mouth, and quite often showed up drunk.

Bill "Spaceman" Lee was my favorite. Used to tell the sportswriters that he sprinkled pot om his breakfast cereal, and publically called his manager, Don Zimmer, a Gerbil during a pennant race.
