Poll question: How sexually attractive are you?
When it comes to physical attractiveness, all people are not created equal. The distribution of physical beauty is in no way equal nor fair. Some people are beautiful, some people are ugly, and most of us fall somewhere in between.

In some kinds of industries, like modeling or the sex industry, your unearned physical appearance will determine whether you get paid a lot, paid a little, or not work at all. It's a case of a "free market" rewarding certain groups through no merit of their own, due mostly to an accident of birth, and taking an existing physical inequality, and creating an economic inequality from it.

Let's pretend we are all models, about the be hired or not, based solely on our physical appearance. How good looking are you?

78. beautiful
Don't look at me

Everyday is so wonderful, then suddenly, it's hard to breathe
Now and then I get insecure, from all the fame
I'm so ashamed

I am beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring me down
I am beautiful in every single way
Yes words can't bring me down, Oh no
So don't you bring me down today

To all your friends you're delirious
So consumed in all your doom
Trying hard to fill the emptiness, the pieces gone,
Left the puzzle undone, ain't that the way it is?

You are beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring you down, no, no
Cause you are beautiful in every single way
Yes words can't bring you down. Oh, no
So don't you bring me down today

No matter what we do, (No matter what we do)
No matter what we say, (No matter what we say)
We're the song inside the tune, (yeah) full of beautiful mistakes (oh yeah)
And everywhere we go, (And everywhere we go)
The sun will always shine
(The sun will Always, Always, Shine)
And tomorrow we might awake on the other side

'Cause we are beautiful no matter what they say
Yes words won't bring us down, no
We are beautiful in every single way
Yes words can't bring us down, oh , no
So don't you bring me down today

Mm, yeah, don't you bring me down today
Yeah, yeah, ooh,
Don't you bring me down today

4. I remember when the whole DU calendar issue was around
Some of the unattractive people of DU got pissed because the attractive people posted their pics on a thread.

Listen, if you are no good at golf, don't join the country club.

9. Some of the unattractive people?
That's me you are talking about, dear.

I found the calendar idea to be juvenile, ridiculous, and exclusionary. What I look like has nothing to do with my opinion.

"if you are no good at golf, don't join the country club?"

Using your analogy, would you keep physically challenged people from joining your club? Now there's a club I am not interested in being a part of.

54. good question - would DU print a calendar with physically disabled people?
The original calendar idea, if I recall correctly, was "Women/Men of DU" and the implication was that the women and men of DU were attractive.

I'm sure if Christopher Reeves were on DU before he was disabled most people would have judged him attractive. Now that he is disabled, is he still attractive? What kinds of disability make you unattractive? Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but if we did a scientific poll, I wonder how it would turn out?

What about an "Ugly Women/Men of DU" Calendar? Would that be good or bad? If that didn't bring in as much money as a "Beautiful Women/Men of DU" would it be worth it?

Of course the Democratic party and DU are open to everyone regardless of how attractive they are, but it seems most of us consider looks important in a Presidential candidate at least. What about other leadership positions?

Attractive people get paid more than unattractive people, taller people get paid more than shorter people, doesn't that make beauty an economic issue? Some ethnic groups are judged more or less attractive by the majority of humans, doesn't that make it a civil rights issue?

5. beauty is in the eye of the beholder
Corporate media and various industries brain wash us into accepting a singular model of beauty in order to control us and sell us things.

Think of the things we could accomplish if we didn't waste that time and energy obsessing over how we look.

6. That is true, but also...
The concept of beauty, with wildly divergent forms, has been around since human beings have been around. Some of the same things are still prized just as they were in caveman times--for example, large breasts, hips, and butt on a woman were a sign that she was fertile, and those attributes are still considered sexy today. And they didn't have Cosmo back then. ;-)

Keep in mind, there is a difference between the concept of "attractive" that women believe in, which is propagated by the model/magazine/beauty industry (representative female--Jennifer Aniston), which includes being stick-thin, having the latest chic haircut, and clothes with expensive labels; and the concept of "attractive" that men believe in, which has pretty much stayed the same for the last 100 years or so (representative female--Catherine Zeta Jones), which includes a curvy figure, long, unstyled hair, and clothes (regardless of label) which reveal the more feminine areas of the body. WOMEN are the ones who perpetuate the media/industry concept of what we are supposed to look like. Men DON'T WANT THAT.

Beauty is a freak accident, a gentic mutation. I have good genes. I know that. It doesn't say anything about who I am as a person, whether I am kind, whether I do good works, whether I care about the environment. On the other hand, it DOES open doors for me and provide me with opportunities that I haven't earned. I am grateful for that. But you know what? There is a woman here on DU (I won't name names) who does not fit the "standard" for beauty in our culture. She is so blissfully happy in her relationship that I am insanely jealous of her. I've never found that in my life. So, you know, looks aren't everything. :)

8. if corporate media brainwashes us into finding something beautiful
that doesn't change the "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" axiom - just that the corporate media was able to influence the eye, so to speak.

Fact is attractive people get paid more and have more options in society than others. Tall people get paid more as well, interestingly enough. Some ethnic groups are considered more attractive than other ethnic groups, even when all ethnics groups are doing the judging. Genetic inequality leads to economic inequality, perhaps that's part of the obsession.

Thinking brightens your eyes, thinking puts a smile on your lips or a sexy frown. A working mind makes a person beautiful. I completely disagree with your assertions. I've seen many of the posters here in the Gallery, and they're hot. Deal with it.

Edited on Thu Aug-28-03 03:19 PM by catpower2000
it is pictures of DUers sent in to a secret location which is manned by DUer username GregW. Only GregW can give you Gallery access. You must PM him with your request, and then he will review your application and make sure you're safe. The Gallery location is ultra-top secret, so that the Freepers can't find it.

Do a search for GregW and send him a PM.

26. I disagree.
There are lots of people in the Gallery who don't fit the standards of beauty in our society, and lots of people who do. It's a good mix, but there are more attractive people than unattractive people. I think it's representative of DUers.

And again I ask, since DUers are probably the most self-aware people in the U.S. population, why would you assume we are deluded about how we look?

except for a segment of people who know they are ugly and blow it out of proportion, they round down. I'm not calling DUers deluded or liars, I'm just saying that people do tend to give themselves the benefit of the doubt and then some when it comes to estimating their looks.

46. Why can't we be the judges of our own attractiveness?
A lot of it has to do with self-confidence. I have one quite unattractive feature, but the rest of me is pretty good, IMHO.

We are asked to rate ourselves and I did so to the best of my ability.

44. I agree a billion percent
No picture necessary! And even the fact that I am in entirely the wrong pool of humans for the real fun on the hood of her car doesn't diminish my appreciation of NSMA's many bodacious qualities.

The same is true of some other DUers whose pictures I have never seen and who I may never meet - they are inherently attractive. Should their physical appearance be of a quality that would not (for whatever reason) ordinarily get me all shook up my perception of that attractiveness would not in any way diminish. Start getting to know people from the inside out and, as long as they're being true to themselves, the external physicality that undeniably plays a part in attraction can perhaps be relegated far, far down the list (if not off it all together).

I should perhaps add that this high end of my externals-liberated continuum of attractiveness includes some male DUers. I am not gay and, the fiendish Ronny K's infernal hypno-Judy-Garland devices not withstanding, have no plans to discover that I am gay (or even bisexual). Basically, that these dudes are as out of my pool of remotely potential romantic partners as are the lovely lesbians of DU is irrelevant to the qualities that make them appealing.

Are 'liberal' or 'progressive' men and women better looking than their opposite numbers (or, indeed, apolitical types)? If I could define my own concept of what is 'good-looking,' leaving aside the fact that everyone's going to have their own set of arbitrary or conditional criteria, maybe I could answer that. It's a fruitless mission. But if you're talking about the inner beauty that most shines in a largely faceless community such as DU, yes, we're total babes in comparison to the reactionary antipatriots of the neoconservative movement.

You don't know me because I've been on this line for a very short time. I have always been beautiful, since I was young and had a lot of men after me. I did't understand relationships and have had a hard time being with men. I have been married twice, the first was not a love interest, although 22 years long, the last, the love of my life 12 years, he died, I found him dead at the bottom of our stairs dead. Beauty is so subjective, I've been thought of as beautiful, sexy, and kind yet men don't want to have a relationship and I certainly don't until I believe a man has the attributes I want need in a relationship.

16. None of the above.
The way our brains work is more important. We age, but our minds become more complex with time. We continue learning and reach a higher rung on the "fitness map" as part of the journey to become more than we were yesterday or the day before. If time is not kind to our bodies, that should not be anything to regret. It is life.

Women usually are the opposite.

43. I find that VERY hard to believe...
A person as lovely as you are on the inside could not POSSIBLY be ugly on the outside.

61. Yes, indeed,
and ugly is as ugly does - just ask any Republican - so you're therefore a stunningly beautiful person. :loveya:

55. In college, I had a girl I I was making out with at a party tell me-
That I was much more attractive up close than from across the room.
For whatever that's worth.

But then what did she know...? She was drunk and on quaaludes at the time.

66. Huh! Says YOU!!!
:-)

You could be the dream-perfect young woman for more than a few dudes, you know, so don't be jumping to any rash conclusions. They behold you ina different way than you behold yourself (same's true for all of us, whatever we think of our 'looks'). And you're still a hot tamale, anyway. :loveya:

64. I just had my teeth removed so I am UGLY!
I have done commercials in the past and I worked on some of the TV shows that have filmed in Chicago so I might pass for alright but now I am the women from the movie Dogfight.

I am butt UGLY right now until I get my teeth and they might still make me butt UGLY.

I told the Dentist to mess my teeth up a little bit so that they don't look fake until I can afford implants.

Yes, I am UGLY and I am high off of my Vicodents right now.

70. I am a legend.........
In my own mind. Actually I am what I appear to be in my posts...somebody's Mom. The person you don't look twice at when she drives by in her purple mini-van...because you are too busy looking at the blond in the convertible Mustang.

79. I was very disappointed to find there was no category...
for "Induces mild retching, but not violent projectile vomiting" -- so I did the only thing I could, and rated myself as stunningly and blindingly attractive to all animals, vegetables, and most minerals. I am also the Queen of England.

80. I don't know
My mother always told me that I was ugly and tried to push me to stay with my first serious boy friend (I was only fifteen when I started dating him) because I might not be able to attract anything better. Luckily, I only stayed with him for a year. A couple of hot guys wanted to date me in high school, but I didn't believe that guys that attractive would want to date someone like me who was so ugly. It wasn't until I was in college and away from my mother that I began to believe that guys might actually find me attractive. I am beginning to think that my mother had insecurities about herself and was projecting it onto my sister and I and perhaps feared that we would become pregnate teens like she was if we were confident in our attractiveness. I do think that I actually started to look better in college though and have stayed the same in relative attractiveness since (I am 25). When I go out, sometimes I become depressed because I see all of the attractive women and do not seem to notice everyone else. Sometimes I do notice everyone else though and think that maybe I don't look so bad after all. I'm married now and my husband thinks I'm attractive so I guess that's what is important.
