30. Buffalo Springfield weren't as prolific
Edited on Wed Jul-14-04 11:40 PM by Fenris
Although considering I was named after one of the members, I should have said them. But hey, Neil Young isn't an American at all!

33. But in the long run their individual members had longer careers
I mean, Neil Young toured with Pearl Jam in the 1990s!

While Neil was Canadian, the band was solidly American

36. Well, see, the individual members (some) had bigger careers
Than the band as a whole. In terms of a band, I think the Byrds were better. Solo wise, it would be Buffalo Springfield.

7. Are we talking only about groups who wrote their own material?
I ask that because many of my favorite American musical group did not. The Four Tops and the Temptations, for example.

25. Grateful Dead
I'm trying to be provocative - but if you look at longevity and influence, they would be in the top 10.

I'd put the Doors in there as well, maybe the Ramones.

Here is another vote for the Grateful Dead. They've had followers for close to 40 years. They may not have recorded in the studio as much as some groups, but the live recordings kept on coming.

40. Why does everyone hate Van Halen?
I listed them because they were VERY influential to an entire generation of rock-n-rollers in America. They're not my favorites and there are many other guitarists I prefer to Eddie, but they did have an enormous impact. However, no one ever seems to acknowledge that.

I could also mention one of my favorites during the 60's, The Young Rascals. Tower Of Power and the Doobie Brothers were also decent bands.

Chick Corea's Return To Forever was one of the most musically accomplished relatively young musical groups ever assembled (although they were doing a fusion of jazz, rock, funk and other things): Chick Corea, Al DiMeola, Lenny White, and Stanley Clarke. It doesn't get much better as far as musicianship goes for the type of music they were playing.
