Yours, however, is a very good question. Although Zambrano is a hoss, he did run out of gas at the end of last year. Really worried about Clement...

Aren't you worried about Danny Graves, though? He's on pace for 95+ innings...very high total for a reliever. Reminds me of Mike Marshall.

I don't mind 100 relief innings -- many have done it for many years; after all, the 1-inning closer has only been around for the past 20 years. It's not so much the innings I'm concerned with as the pitches.

True, there have always been and will always be absolute studs who can throw 130+ innings and be fine. These guys are freaks of nature, though. Trying to compare the modern starter to guys like Warren Spahn or Walter Johnson just doesn't work, though. Yeah, the old timers completed almost every game. But there were fewer strikeouts and fewer walks then. Fewer Ks and fewer BBs = fewer pitches; so they could go more innings without wearing down.

Dusty just doesn't get that.

Oh, and your best LH hitter is a second baseman. That's just sad. :P

18. One other thing:

Arm injuries happened with a greater frequency back then. Lots of instances of pitchers getting burned out early.

I would worry more that Graves is going to pitch in 100 games than anything else. Even the studs like Gossage never racked up more than 75 a year while relieving...and he went over 100 innings only three times in his career.

By the way, check out Marshall's stats. In 1974 he pitcher over 208 innings (!) in relief...in 106 games. Arm went to hell for a few years after that...
