An official with the Arizona Attorney General’s Office said her department hadn’t encountered such a sight in 50 years.

The director of the federal Housing and Urban Development’s Phoenix field office said, “We’ve never seen anything like it. I’m amazed, just amazed.”

Both were reacting to a pair of signs placed in front of an upscale Waddell home.

The first reads: “For sale by owner.”

The second reads: “4 whites only.”

The owner of the home did not return repeated telephone calls. But his sign is getting him plenty of attention.

If the house were being sold by the government, or even a licensed private realtor, then I'd say the government should step in. But don't the owners of the house have the right to exercise their own discretion in choosing a buyer? If they decide to reject offers from people with dark skin, then that's their prerogative, however backwards and disgusting it might be.

The Fair Housing Act covers most housing. In some circumstances, the Act exempts owner-occupied buildings with no more than four units, single-family housing sold or rented without the use of a broker, and housing operated by organizations and private clubs that limit occupancy to members.

Not, "We won't..." or, "We're afraid to..."

The "we can't" says to me that this person is accidentally admitting that the social code of this neighborhood enforces the norm--in this case, that norm is virulent bigotry.

This reminds me of the person who says, "I feel badly about ____." Notice the grammar: not, "I feel bad," as in, "I have an emotion that is unpleasant." This statement actually translates to, "I do not have the capacity to experience an emotional reaction to _____."

When I was a kid, about 10 or 12, I overheard one of the neighborhood men talking to my dad about another neighbor's plan to sell his house. The guy said to dad, "I sure hope he doesn't sell it to any of them black people." I honestly do not recall what my dad's response was.

The funny thing was, we lived in such a lily-white area that the chances of a black family buying that home were beyond infinitesimal! It was never gonna happen anyway, but the guy had to worry about it nonetheless.
