A 51-year-old man from Gray has been arrested in connection with a string of criminal charges resulting from bizarre attacks in area cemeteries.
Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre reported today that Michael J. Sterkins, 3703 Chris St., Gray, was arrested this morning on multiple charges from five law enforcement jurisdictions.
Larry Weidel, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, said police officers from Lafourche and Terrebonne sheriff’s offices, Lockport Police Department and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office participated in the investigation and arrest of Sterkins.
In Lafourche Parish, Sterkins is charged with aggravated battery and second-degree kidnapping.
Weidel said these charges stem from a March 7 incident where he came up behind a 10-year-old girl in the Lockport Cemetery, dragged her to another part of the cemetery, held her down and cut off her pony tail. Law enforcement officials said Sterkins tried to do the same thing in Thibodaux Sunday at the St. Joseph Cemetery when he grabbed a woman who was able to break away from his grasp and escape.
