I am in a mood for the Who
just got a best of comp on CD, to go with all my albums. Which period do you like best?

The early mod years?

THe shaggy Daltry rock god period?

The Rock Opera Period

The Pete Townshend new age Meher Baba period - love Rough Mix, myself.

The Synth period?

Sorry, should have been a poll. Oh well.

Me I like the Mod period best, for some reason.

All in all, Uncle Pete writes great songs and the guitar and keyboard sounds are unmatched.

1. a few
Who's Next (Lighthouse project) is my favorite, followed by Quadrophenia and Tommy.

For a great compilation, the new (well few years old) Live at Leeds is insurpassable for live Who recordings IMO.

Rock on!

4. Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy, however since
Pete turned pro-Iraq-War, I try to only buy used Who. Do not want to enhance his revenue stream these days.

21. Before You Get On Pete Townshend's Case....
...you might want to read what Pete posted on his web site concerning the War in Iraq and F911:

* * * * *

7 July 2004

Fahrenheit Moore or Less

Michael Moore has been making some claims - mentioning me by name - which I believe distort the truth.

He says - among other things - that I refused to allow him to use my song WON’T GET FOOLED AGAIN in his latest film, because I support the war, and that at the last minute I recanted, but he turned me down. I have never hidden the fact that at the beginning of the war in Iraq I was a supporter. But now, like millions of others, I am less sure we did the right thing.

When first approached I knew nothing about the content of his film FAHRENHEIT 911. My publisher informed me they had already refused the use of my song in principle because MIRAMAX the producers offered well below what the song normally commands for use in a movie. They asked me if I wanted to ask for more money, I told them no.

Nevertheless, as a result of my refusal to consider the use, Harvey Weinstein - a good friend of mine, and my manager Bill Curbishley - interceded personally, explained in more detail to Bill what the movie was about, and offered to raise the bid very substantially indeed. This brought the issue directly to me for the first time. Bill emailed me and told me how keen Harvey and Michael Moore were to use my song.

23. Oddly,
I don't find that persuasive at all.

But I've been a fan of Pete Townshend's for over 20 years, so perhaps I have developed an antipathy toward his bullshit mode.

I had a post about Athena and then Won't get Fooled Again. Townsend is an interesting man, albiet idiosyncratic.

10. I know of no bad Who
All the periods were fantastic. My band where huge Who fans back in the day.
Here we are in 1980. Can you see any Who influence? I still play with these same guys.

14. I thought you guys looked really young
well I was 22 back then, so... what a cool band to emulate, I say. Proto-punks, as far as I am concerned. I loved their mod phase, as well. Do you still play music and if so, what kind? :)

16. I always thought of them as punks also
Yes, we still play. I've been with these same guys since 1977. We play rock, much like the who and just about everything else. We do more original stuff these days and I am the songwriter/singer guitarist.

18. that's neat
I was in two post-punk/indie- type bands and played drums, a little guitar, bass, and keyboards, etc. for many years. We made a couple of self-published albums and played out around SW PA, where I live. Then parenthood intervened. But I am taking drum lessons and hoping to find some other folks to play with. :) It is really good to play music. I miss it.

22. The Who Sell Out -- an interesting commentary on our culture . . .
It has ads for products -- pimple cream, jaguar, deodorant, coca-cola, etc --- really far ahead of its time (1967) in showing how rock can be merged into commodities and sold.

The reissue is really great. I like all the early stuff; I stopped listening after the 1972 stuff --- I prefer punk after that time frame (stooges, ramones, dolls, etc).
