If so, when were you there and what do you remember?

I was there '84-'88 and I recall walking to early morning classes with the Campanile chiming, watching the fog roll in over the Golden Gate Bridge from an upper dorm window, sitting at what was then called Cafe Roma at the top of Bancroft Ave., reading by Strawberry Creek, attending concerts (Pretenders, etc) at the Greek Theater, Thursday night parties, drinks at Manny's and Henry's and Larry Blake's, big slices at Blondie's, Rasputin Records, studying in Doe, driving to S.F. on Friday nights, and many more memories.

The campus characters then were the Bubble Lady, Rick Starr (!) the very bad singer, Scott the talented piano man (who would wheel his piano out onto Sproul Plaza), the anti-apartheid ribbon-giver guy, the lady who walked her pig and goat on campus, and the transvestite guy. This was just before the Naked Guy came into prominence.

Ah, Cal.

1. I took an online course from them once.
Expensive, but it was good. I needed the hours anyway.

I know, I know. This post doesn't answer any of your questions, but I've never actually been there.

2. My son is there now.
I think there are still some folks on Telegraph who were probably there during your time.

I attended '68 to '72. Campus characters then, were Holy Hubert, a very loving-hearted evangelist (with a full compliment of Hubert-wannabee's), his nemesis, Isaac the Satanist (who, I now believe is a Wiccan or something), a strange lady who walked up and down Telegraph chain smoking cigarettes, wearing a tattered sweater, and rattling off random faster than a computer. There was also young Jack London (I believe related to the American writer), who was also a cousin of Rick something-or-other, who can be seen coming out of the jewelry store just ahead of Dustin Hoffman in "The Graduate". I lived just around the corner from all the action in a rooming house on Haste (1/2 block off Telegraph) just a stone's throw from People's Park.

I could go on and on, but I won't just now.

Waiting for a bus on University Avenue... Was just back in Berkeley (grew up there and went to college there -- forgot about Holy Hubert, as per the post #4! A character from my childhood!) for my longest single stretch in years...

Excited to see her still around, and was trying to explain to my five year-old who she was, after we drove past...

Anyway, you touched on lots of memories. I graduated in '81...

6. Wow, I'm glad she's still around.
It's good to know some things never change.

I get to Berkeley once in awhile -- not enough, though.

My kids are old enough now to take it all in, so I'll bring them soon.

11. I'm a bonafide Berkeley dropout :)
In and out in 1993, only managed a handful of credits. I didn't drop out for laziness either...I was already a very skilled computer programmer, and I was offered an $80k a year position at 19 years old! My dad, who'd mortgaged his house to put me through college, flipped out when I dropped, but when I pointed out that I was making more than him DESPITE the fact that he's got an MS in chemistry and three decades of experience, he shut up.

In retrospect, it was a huge mistake. The high paying jobs evaporated at the end of the boom and I was left unemployed with no degree and nobody to pay my way anymore. I like the money I made and still have many assets gained during the boom, but educationally I'm nowhere near where I wanted to be today (my life plan had been to pursue a PhD in physics). Oh well...you live, you learn.
