I need a new frog pond, i guess
The last day or 2 as i've stepped out on the front porch, there has been a frog sitting in the cat's water dish. He's not doing anything but just sitting there. I suppose sooner or later there may be tadpoles, or worse case, the cat will decide he's just too delectable.

The thing is there is a creek that winds by my place about 75' or so at the closest, and by the bank of the yard at the furthest...
I suppose i could just move it to the creek, unless the snakes there are the reason it's decided the cat's water dish is a safer environment. The dish is only about 6" wide, and holds just about an inch (refills from a 1 liter bottle that we keep filled).

So, what's the best way to give froggy a better squatting spot? Toss back to the creek? Or set up a new, improved pad somewhere close that it will adapt to, hopefully, 'cause i don't want to go out one morning and see the guilty look on the cat's face.

1. I say move it to the creek
Does your cat really drink water? Ours doesn't. I've never seen her drinking out of her water bowl. I don't know how she survives.

5. i guess he does
he knows its his dish, and i've seen him watching the frog while he lay in front of the dish. I guess they had a standoff at that point, because the next time i looked, the cat was gone and the frog remained. That was yesterday.
I shoo'ed the frog off the porch, but he was back again. And has been here 2 days regularly. He's moved in i'm sure.

I don't mind moving him to the creek, but my daughter wants to make it a frog pond now, or something bigger and better that allllll the creatures can enjoy (mosquitos included) and live in harmony...

I have an old xmas tree stand dish i suppose i could set out with more water, surround with rocks, etc and try to coax the critter into moving into it...

or toss to the creek...

3. We have a frog pond
and also have a toad who's decided the top step outside our sliding door is just a fabulous spot to chill. The dogs have gotten to where they don't even pay any attn to him any more....I think they both have sniffed at him and decided he's not their taste. :D

There's a gazillion tadpoles and semi-frog-type-critters in the pond now, I shudder to think what it's gonna be like when they all mature. :scared:

8. i guess that's what
i have to set up. How large? Would a gallon be enough? I think the xmas tree stand i have would hold most of one.

I guess i'll put it over under the blueberries and we'll remember to keep water in it as long as we are picking and keeping up with them..

10. We actually have a fishtank
(a small one, 15 gal or so)outside now, in addition to the actual pond. The tadpoles are mostly in there. I think we may have insured they'll stay forever as we discovered the 4-yr old (who feeds the outside fish every morning) has been putting some fish food in their tank as well. :D

4. Ewww.. Isn't that a toad?
I have them in my yard too.

Sounds like you need a little frog/wading pond. I bet the birds would like it too.

11. it may be a toad
still a yin thing. Most of my bird water is too high up for the toad/frog.

We've had a lot of rain lately, so i was curious why he'd pick the cat dish, unless he wanted to tempt fate..?...

guess i'll set up a toad/frog pond. Supposedly you can set an old clay pot upside down with a hole in the side and they'll move in.
We'll see...btw, i just went and checked....still sitting there, and has been for the majority of the day.

7. Having spent much of my childhood with amphibians/reptiles...
that is most definitely a toad. Frogs have a smoother, moister skin. Toads have bumpy wart-type things and dryer skin.

14. Toad is fine by me
i have some toad-lilies growing so i'll transplant a few to his 'pond' that i guess i now have to set up.

No special care i hope, as opposed to a frog, since i don't know one from the other at first glance in the cat dish...

9. That looks like a toad to me.
We used to have a huge one that got into our basement every night. We still don't know how he got in.

I would always take him back outside and put him far away from the cats, so he would hop back into the cornfield, or some other safe place.

I found out later that my cats left him alone because toads don't taste good to cats. That is probably why your cat has ignored him.

My dog just sniffed him, too. Maybe dogs don't like toad, either.

I would just leave him alone. He will probably come back, anyway, if he feels like it.

13. looks like a bufo toad to me
Edited on Thu Jul-15-04 10:46 PM by bullimiami
poison excretes from glands on back. smart dogs and cats stay away from them.

chase it, toss it, scare it away. let it find another home.

we get them in the dog bowl sometimes. its rainy season here and they are everywhere. hoppin around, getting flattened by cars.

17. What's your location?
Edited on Thu Jul-15-04 11:00 PM by GoddessOfGuinness
I don't think that's the "cane toad" type of bufo, but it definitely appears to be a toad of some variety.

Do you have a garden? I like attracting toads to my veggies, as effective, earth-friendly bug control.

18. NC
and i've had frogs (which may be toads) in my garden regularly, but it's on the other side of my house and away from the house.
This is the first one that's climbed the steps and made its way to the front porch and front door.

I don't mind it there as long as the cat doesn't.

I guess i'll get it a better pond locale and just keep it near the front.

19. If you build a new pond,
don't be surprised if the toad continues to make house calls. He's found a good spot...fresh water, and plenty of food in the bugs that are attracted by your house lights in the evening.

Now if you only had a girlfriend for him...

More or less, my new 'watch toad'.
