Anybody get their internet through their satellite TV service? |
|
and if so, how does it compare to, say, DSL?

Good download speeds, but horrible latency. If you're a gamer, or need to do any sort of SSH/telnet/FTP work, you probably won't like it. If you just browse a lot, and download lots of large files, it works just fine.

2. cool. Hate to sound like an idiot, but .... |

I take it you mean uploading is slow, but downloading is fast?
I have no idea what "latency" means.
Sorry, I'm 42. :)

4. Latency: Time for packet to go from source to destination |
|
High latency, but high bandwidth means it takes a bit (about a second) for a packet (unit of information) to go from source to destination , but once the connection is established, you can download quickly.
All other things being equal, DSL is better than satellite. But, if you are choosing between satellite and dial-up, satellite is still better.

It would go down for weather disturbances, and not necessarily in the local area, and worse -- any time something was "going down," my internet connection was down too--things that make you go hmmmmm...I don't think they were jammin' to the oldies.

5. I didn't know that was still possible. |

I thought that the company that was doing it went out of business. I remember the reviews being bad. It gets even worse with the weather.

How many dollars for the internet to be added to sat tv? esp, for the dish sat company, but any one's cost will help me to figure this out. Big bundles of gratitude and a cocker spaniel kiss.

I get D/L speeds up to 1.2 fairly consistently. I don't game, on-line or otherwise, so, can't comment on that. In really bad storm activity I have lost it for 20 minutes or so. When I lived in the city my cable (roadrunner) went down more often. (I usually shut the box down anyway, because of the chance of losing power out here in the boonies). All in all, it's not as fast as my old cable service but it fits my needs. On a side note: I didn't have any net access for the first 3 weeks I lived here. It's amazing How much I DIDN'T miss it. ... ... ...
