What's the best way to wash a comforter? |
|
I have a large comforter with foam-type interior. I'd like to wash it, but I'm woried about a) destroying it, or b) never being able to get it dry.
Suggestions?

We bought the new Neptune washer/dryer system and I thought I would be able to wash our huge, beloved comforter. I popped it in, it took for ever to dry, and the underside is now ripped and torn. My suggestion is to drop it off at the drycleaners. The neptune is a big washer but even it cannot handle a large comforter.
Don't get me started on my other troubles with this machine. ;)

Your comforter must be bigger than mine - it washed like a dream and dried in only about, um, well, four hours or so....;)
Sorry about yours.:(

8. It was a really nice, really expensive (we got it as a gift for our |
|
wedding) brocade comforter, and now it's in tatters. I am able to wash the children's comforters in it.
The Neptune washes well, we've just had to have it serviced 3 times.

13. Uh-oh, this is not good news |
|
I've only had mine for three months. We tried to get the big drying center but it wouldn't fit into our basement so I just have the regular dryer.
How long have you had yours, by chance? I do not do well without a washer. I get very crabby.x(

17. Our troubles were in the first three months of ownership, so perhaps |
|
you are safe!! :) We've had ours for about four and I've now gone a month (knock wood) with no trouble. I get crabby too! Our old one died. MrG was going to buy me the drying center, but I could not justify the expense, but it would have been cool! The guy who delivered it said it wouldn't have fit in our basement either, and that they are more for first floor laundry rooms or the basements in newer homes. So I saved my self the depression of having to send it back...
...Gee, do you think Will will mind that we are hijacking his thread?? ;)

3. front loader at laundro-mat |
|
use a "triple-loader"
It will dry just fine in those big dryers too.
If it's dark material, use cold water, otherwise warm.

5. I'd take it to the cleaners |
|
They usually know what to do with them.
I take mine -- which seems to have just some light stuffing inside -- to the laundromat, and use their double-load machine, and then dry in the regular (oversized) dryer.

There should be a tag on the comforter with washing instructions on it. As hard as I know this is for a guy...read and follow the instructions.
Or have it dry cleaned.

7. You have a couple of options |
|
One, bring it to a laundromat with the big machines, and wash it there. In the dryer, take an old sneaker and toss it in with it. It makes it fluffy again. You can even turn it to hot for the first 20 minutes of drying it, and then switch it to a cooler temp to try to make it even fluffier.
Two, try a dry cleaners. They will likely be able to handle it, though it might cost a small fortune.
Three hand wash it and hand it out to dry. Unless you've got patience, though, this latter can be a real bitch. The bathtub is probably the only place you can do it, though.
Fourth, forgo washing it completely, and spray it with Febreze.

31. 'Twas the second DU Gathering in Philly |

Lynne had produced the obligatory jug of tequila, and many shots were downed. At 11pm I got a call from Canadian Nationa Radio, asking to do an interview. I said sure, though I was kinda sauced. I took the phone out into the hallway so the noise of the hotel room party wouldn't distract. While on the phone, I smoked a couple of cigarettes out in the hall. Lyne, paranoid that the management would toss us for smoking, came by every ten minutes and doused me and the ten feet around me with Febreeze, while I was on the phone with all of Canada.

26. I wash my down comforter in my regular home washer, my procedure |
|
Edited on Fri Jul-16-04 11:22 AM by Demonaut
is, Put comforter in washer and fill on rinse mode, let it spin to squeeze out most of the air, then refill on wash with warm water, monitoring the level of air still in the comforter and squeezing out by hand as much as possible, after the wash it goes in the dryer with a couple of old shoes cased in athletic socks to fluff it back out, usually I have to tape the door shut to stop the shoes from beating the door open. I have a cat who loves to pee on my comforters, or any cloth for that matter.
