Okay DU investigative minds - what do you make of this?

Okay, so this story with the guy with the stolen identity, is getting a little more questionable. Okay, so far, the guy has been in touch with his MLA (Member of legislative assembly) and his MP (Member of parliament). He didn't show up for a meeting with his MP, but did show up with one with his MLA. Now the MLA offered to help get him on welfare until his situation was sorted out. But he declined to go to the welfare office saying because his wife is an American it can't happen.
As well, I asked him when he could work, he says with the way his life is going his wife is a bundle of nerves so he doesn't want to leave her alone.
Yesterday he called up sounding like he wanted to kill himself, so I called the RCMP, sent them a photo and told them where he was staying. They went there and couldn't find him.
He asked me if I could phone the bailiff to find out how many days he had to get his stuff, I told him no (I'm not his fucking attorney).
See, it seems weird, this guy has had a shit-load of money taken from him yet won't take any help despite his new wife and her kids living in a trailer on a campsite with him?
I tried to do a background check in Alabama but was unsuccessful. I called a border guard station where he was allegedly arrested when coming into Canada and haven't heard back.
What does this sound like to you and do you need me to clarify anything....My head is kind of spinning.

1. Sounds weird to me, too.

Why would his wife being American prevent HIM from getting welfare? Couldn't he just get it for himself as a stopgap measure?

I used to deal with people with mental problems (mostly elderly) and this guy sounds a little like a paranoid schizophrenic. I would bet that nothing he has told you is the truth -- they tend to make up total stories to tell people, and they are unable to reason effectively.

2. Strange that he is calling a newspaper...

...and not taking traditional means of support for emergencies.

I wonder if he's wanting you to print a story so that the public ponies up some money for him.
