Listening to the local celtic/british folk show.,...
..they just played someone doing "Fair Nottamun Town"...and I recognized the tune immediately. Dylan cribbed it for "Masters of War" .
I always liked that song, Now I know why..the tune is an old folksong!

1. Pretty common for the old folkies to do that. |
|
I'll bet that tune was something else originally. Tunes move around. It doesn't make Dylan a rip-off artist.

9. They're simple tunes for simple vocal chords. |
|
That's the whole point of folk music, it's the music of the ordinary worker.

3. Sit down, my friend. Dylan nicked nearly all his melodies |
|
Edited on Fri Jul-16-04 02:47 PM by jpgray
He nicked his voice from Ralph Stanley and Woody Guthrie. But the folk tradition is stealing old ideas and putting them through your own head. In fact, that's the tradition of all music, folk music just allows for more direct theft. Just because Minnesota doesn't produce Oklahoman accents doesn't mean an obsessed Jewish kid can't pick one up and sing songs with it. And do it well, I might add. :) If all it took was stealing, Dylan wouldn't have the respect that goes with being something unique--the guy had talent.

7. I heard a great parody of Dylan by the Dry Branch Fire Squad... |
|
..well, their lead did it.
He sort of did a parody of Dylan singing "Hard Times" (the old Stephen Foster song).
