When my mom and her sister visited the place, which is near the Sweden/Norway border, the family that currently resides there warmly welcomed them, and showed them around the place.

To thank them for their kindness, Mom sent a copy of a photo of the house just after it had been finished, with Great Great Grandpa and family (the builders) standing in front.

69. And -- in modern times, Field Marshall C. G. E. Mannerheim of Finland
Edited on Sat Jul-17-04 07:19 PM by Vitruvius
http://www.mannerheim.fi/ , especially http://www.mannerheim.fi/tori_e/e_intro.htm and the following pages. Mannerheim's masterly defense against Soviet aggression in the opening days of WWII (during the Hitler-Stalin nonaggression pact) is taught in War Colleges to this day.

Charles XII of Sweden (reigned 1697 to 1718) was also a military genius, but a bit of a maniac -- and, ultimately, a disaster for Russia, Poland, and Sweden. So he's interesting, but definitely NOT cool. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_XII_of_Sweden ; also http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/charles_xii_of_sweden.htm

59. Niels Abel (mathematician), Niels Bohr (physicist), Henrik Ibsen
Edited on Fri Jul-16-04 07:58 PM by Vitruvius
(playwright), Egil Hylleraas (physicist). Abel is probably the least known of the three amongst laypeople, but was one of the greatest mathematicians who ever lived; see also: http://www.mnc.net/norway/abel.htm ; if you have a technical background see also http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/biography/Abel.html

Bohr created the original version of Quantum Mechanics -- the "old quantum mechanics" that laid the groundwork for the modern quantum mechanics of Schrodinger and Heisenberg.

Ibsen needs no introduction on DU.

Hylleraas was an extremely influential atomic physicist. (b/t/w, for the physicists out there, Hylleraas also wrote a wonderful 2-volume work on mathematical physics that is packed with insight and a joy to read. A pity it is not better known in this country.)
