Who has read the E.C. horror comics of the 50's (Tales From the Crypt)? |
|
I devoured Tales From the Crypt/Vault of Horror/Haunt of Fear when I was in Junior High; writers such as Stephen King and Clive Barker were similarly enthralled and drew inspiration from them. Eschewing the elegance of Poe, these stories instead seemed to emulate the twisted children stories of the Victorian era and added a touch of Grand Guignol to the proceedings. When you think about it, they were R-rated morality tales. Perverse and conservative as hell--I loved them.
Does anyone remember:
"The October Game"--An adaptation of Ray Bradbury's most haunting story, centering on a man's plot to kill his daughter as a way to lash out at his hated wife...during the famous Halloween game.
"And All Through the House"--A woman murders her husband on Christmas Eve, only to preyed upon by a maniac dressed as Santa Claus (this was adapted for the HBO series).

1. I was much more into DC Comics... |
|
but certainly I occasionally read those wonderful old horror comics, too. I vividly remember the October Game! It scared the life out of me. I recall another scary one: "The Abduction of Henry Twigg," which had all sorts of psycho-sexual implications I wasn't old enough to grasp, but thoroughly enjoyed.

They were great!
My mom had then and they led me on to Creepy, Erie and Vamperilla in the 60's and 70's.

4. I read them IN the 50s |
|
...ok, it was the early sixties at the barbershop, old wornout copies. They would take Poe stories (public domain, natch) and illustrate them. I remember reading "The Cask of Amantillado" and "The Pit and the Pendulum." William Gaines was a great man. Too bad MAD didn't die when he did.

5. I used to read reprints about 30 years ago |
|
My stupid step-father banned them from the house once he was "born again", but I was lucky enough that my Grandmother still bought them for me.
