i found out my roomate this fall will be from Ghana.
this is gonna be interesting... im kinda excited to meet him, kinda nervous, but... im goin to college to meet people not like me (even though im not going far from home) and i guess its garunteed to happen now.

so, uh... are there any major cultural concearns i should be aware of to not offend this guy? i say that at the risk of sounding obsessed with political correctness, but ya know, i am gonna have to live with this guy for 8 months or so, and i dont wanna get off on the wrong foot with him.

1. Cool... Ghanans are cool
My High School had a Ghanan exchange student and he was a great guy.

2. you've got the right attitude, everything else will fall into place.
let yourself remain open to the breadth of experiences that he can bring you, and you him. Good luck.

3. Don't worry about it
It may take a few weeks before you readily understand each others' English. No biggie.

Like all overseas students, he may be lonely and disoriented.

Ghanaians I have met have been very friendly. Just be yourself.

4. I have never lived with someone from Ghana but....
I have had many co-workers from there. I can't think of anything major cultural concerns to tell you about that I ever knew about.

I do know that they learn English as children and can usually speak and read English as well if not better than most Americans.(At least that goes for the 8 or 9 I have met.)

7. I worked with a wonderful, sweet, brilliant, kind man from Ghana.
The kind of person you could love. He was a "black" african, a muslim.

8. We had a good friend from Ghana
We've lost contact with him and his son but they were great friendly people. And both Dad and son had really great senses of humor. With luck your new roomie will be like them. Don't worry to much about offending him-just be open and honest. If he got to watch any TV he probably is scared of us. Friends of ours who have since returned to Turkey told us that their friends and family in Turkey thought they would return as mean Texas Bastards like JR. They thought it was a riot, Me, I was appalled to think that people get their view of us from stupid American TV shows and movies.

What would he think if he got a Repuke? I'd say you're both fortunate in roommates. Neither of you got a repuke!

15. At my boarding school
the smartest guy in the school was from Ghana. He was also an amazing soccer player and told some pretty interesting stories, like about the wild animals that he encountered at home. He was in my anthropology class and I felt totally embarrassed to be forced to debate on the "pro" side of Eugenics.:-(
