14. Nope, pandas ARE bears. Again.

They used to be considered bears (family Ursidae) but were then reclassified as members of the raccoon family, along with the most excellent red panda. That's certainly how I learned it: so many people used to call them 'panda bears' that, like 'koala bear,' was a misnomer worth pointing out.

At some more recent point, though, new evidence and a reclassification rearranged the taxonomy such that giant pandas are now considered members of the bear family in good standing.
