so, i have a couple of shekels to invest. maybe this is paranoid, but i'm thinking that something that i can grab as i flee this country come the war would be a good thing. not looking so much for return as safety and negotiability. something i could carry safely to a safe place. something i could turn into local currency. we have the basic kinda stuff, 410k, house, etc. i have been buying some art, which is an enjoyable long term investment. but i really want a small investment in "catastrophe proofing" so, i'm thinking some gold. i started thinking about the gold teals that saved some vietnamese refugees. so, any informed opinions here? i was looking at some coins on ebay today. my suspicion would be that you might as well just buy new maple leafs. i suspect the collectible value of old coins is softer, not as readily negotiated. whatcha think?

I'm paying about $50 for 1/10-gram of gold. The value you're buying is in the metal itself, not the age of the coin--if Excerement Hits Oscillator nobody is going to care how old the coin is.
Also consider investing in silver rounds (cheaper but bigger) because in an emergency you'll want to have something to trade for food, etc. that won't deplete your supply of gold.
(Which reminds me--it's about time to pick up another gold coin..)

They usually have very good prices, but I think you need to buy a minimum of ten ounces, which will cost you around $4600.00
I personally think SILVER is the better value right now. Those American Eagle coins are beautiful and recognized anywhere in the world. You do pay a small premium over bullion content for their quality though. I think its worth it.
Good luck
