Metallica. It's over, right? After "St. Anger," it's pretty much over.
Into the mainstream for "the black album." Hit & miss with "Load" & "Reload." Treading water with the "Garage" CD. An admirable risk with "S&M," only to end up on "St. Anger"...

The new "Some Kind of Monster" EP is getting a lot of "at least it's better than St. Anger...and shorter, thank God" reviews.

So...is it over?

4. Oh, don't say that...
...Lars Ulrich will start crying about how he can't make his SUV payments again because you're stealing from him.

6. Lars knew that "St.Anger" would suck
so much that he had to stop people from downloading samples or they wouldn't have sold one copy. That's the real reason for his downloading fight.

12. I wrote this last June, based on their press release
Edited on Sat Jul-17-04 09:18 PM by rocknation
"Due to the unprecedented level of anticipation and the prevalence of sub-standard versions of METALLICA's upcoming CD St. Anger, already in circulation, Elektra Records has moved up the release date of the new album, from Tuesday, June 10, to Thursday, June 5."
TRANSLATION: Due to the prevalence of substandard music on St. Anger which is eroding the unprecedented anticipation, Elektra Records have moved up the release date to insure maximum sales before the whole truth comes out.

"Elektra and METALLICA have taken this extraordinary measure to ensure that counterfeit copies of the band's first studio album in six years do not proliferate in the marketplace."
TRANSLATION: Elektra and METALLICA have taken this extraordinary measure to pre-empt the lukewarm response to the release of the St. Anger single to rock radio.

"A spokesperson for Elektra indicates that this is a rare exception to standard release policy for the label, pointing out that demand for the new METALLICA album warrants every measure be undertaken to prevent unauthorized leaks of St. Anger..."
TRANSLATION: Having announced earlier that St. Anger will ship one million copies, the demand for St. Anger must be kept inflated because the unauthorized leaks indicate that album isn't that good, which will cut down on the shipping orders.

"In the past year, superstar artists such as EMINEM and 50 CENT have both moved up their respective release dates to stem illegal piracy..."
TRANSLATION: EMINEM and 50 CENT deliberately leaked their own material onto the Internet in order encourage file sharing and get media attention by complaining about the piracy issue. Since their music was of acceptable quality to their fans, the scheme worked, and both went multiplatinum.

"...METALLICA has conjured up a slew of unique activities and promotions to celebrate the release of...St. Anger..."
TRANSLATION: METALLICA have conjured up a slew of unique activities and promotions because they know St. Anger isn't strong enough to survive on its own merits and will tank after a quick 1-2 million copies sold. And of course, they'll blame it on downloading.

9. Poor Lars Ulrich!
He lost so much money from copyright infringement, that he had to sell his snare drum for a tin can!

3. Doesn't a big part of the movie have to deal with downloading?
If so, that's a good way to re-open old wounds.

7. I think the last good album Metallica made was
"...And Justice For All." I've liked a few of their songs since then, but I thought they really sold out after that. They just stopped making heavy metal. St. Anger was the heaviest thing they've put out in years and after hearing the title song I thought they might be on a come back. But I heard a few other cuts off the album and they generally sucked. I think the damn thing has still sold a couple of million albums, though.

8. It has been over since the black album
Edited on Sat Jul-17-04 09:06 PM by ZombyWoof
That was their first step into inadvertent Spinal Tap self-parody, the new film being their second and probably last.

They were classic right up through "...And Justice For All." They have sucked royal ever since.

Slayer is a far better bet in the same genre.

I was there when "Kill 'Em All" came out. I find it rather disheartening to see all the younger fans excuse ANYTHING they did in the 90's as listenable or uncompromising. So sad to see pioneers waste themselves away like this.

10. I liked Metallica the first time when they were called Led Zeppelin.
P.S. - Everything after And Justice for All = terrible.

For Christmas, who wants to go in with me on a drum key so Lars can loosen his snare head?

11. Led Zeppelin?
Can't say I ever heard any similarities between the two bands. Dio-era Black Sabbath would probably be closer.

I know there aren't any similarities. That's why it's funny.

PS - I liked Black Sabbath the first time when they were called Dave Matthews.

I guess my humor button has been pushed too many times today. I've been cleaning out my Daily Show episodes and putting them on DVD today. After a while, reality and fiction starts blurring.

17. Metallica, the band DUers love to hate
What is the big shit! So what if they don't want you to illegally make copies of their work. They make good music so buy it. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Do we all have to have this communal type attitude of share, share, share. Jeebus Chist! Who cares if they were a harsh and strict about their music. If I spent time making music then I would want to profit from it making a living. Even though the mighty dollar is evil, you need it to live.

They could have done things better, but they I still like Metallica. They have evolved. Shit, not all bands can be Phish!

20. I don't dislike them because of that file sharing shit
I really don't blame them for that. I don't buy the argument that people will buy the album after checking out a few songs for free. I've gotten music for free and I do it to keep from spending money on cds.

The reason I dislike Metallica is because they stopped making heavy metal and started making more radio friendly stuff. Not only did their style of music change, but so did their lyrics. They stopped making a statement with their music.

23. Totally agreed. I'll joke about the downloading, but that's their right
I was a fan from their first cd, but they lost me somewhere after the Black Album. I can't even bring myself to dislike them as I still remember playing "One" all the time when I was younger.

And it's not that I don't dislike hard music now. As is, I'm listening to harder music as a 30-something than I ever did as I did when I was younger.

27. You can blame Bob Rock for that.
But he made them millionaires. You can only live on the edge for so long. I certainly don't think they are sell-outs though.

If I may quote my friend John, expressing his disappointment after buying St. Anger:

"I listened to St. Anger, then I spent two hours trying to find the other good song on the album."

Edited on Sat Jul-17-04 09:50 PM by Bush_Eats_Beef
because after years of endless, wanking, self-indulgent "guitar face" solos...you guessed it...I still have a soft spot for 'em. Even the bad ones.

ON EDIT: I meant "years of endless, wanking, self-indulgent "guitar face" solos" to include ALL rock guitarists...'twas not a slam at Metallica.
