Why do some guys wear tee shirts under other shirts in the summer? Particularly the "wife beater" style.

I understand wearing short-sleeve tee-shirts under shirts you don't want to wash each time you wear. And I can understand why "wife beater" types don't have pits - so wearers can breathe and sweat easier. Then what's the point of the rest of the shirt? Certainly not to keep warm or keep every part of a dress shirt cleaner - except for the pits.

Why? What's the point?

1. Keeps moisture away from the outer shirt.
Some of us sweat, ya know...so, I tend to wear a t-shirt so the outer shirt does get all sweaty and nasty.

It has no pits to protect the outer shirt from where you sweat most. I see these being worn under other shirts quite often, most recently by the guy in front of my at the bank this week. See post #3 for further consternation.

7. That's not a tee, it's a tank.
Multi-layers allow air to circulate. In the winter, the layers trap warmth. In the summer - assuming you're not wearing a heavy winter shirt - they allow air to circulate between the laters...and the undershirt absorbs a little moisture.

2. It's part of of the uniform regulations I have to work under
and a T-shirt under the shirt sucks.n It's not as bad as body armour, however.

3. I don't get the wifebeater thing either.
I'll usually wear a t-shirt (with short sleeves) under my shirt even in hot weather, because I sweat like mad and I got sick of ruining shirts, but the sleeveless ones just leave you open to deodorant stains and other ruinous nastiness. I consider them the dumbest garments outside of painter caps and scarves tied around the neck.

5. scarves around the kneck can be sexy!
Is that also why guys wear the wife-beaters under button downs?

I kinda doubt it as I'm sure many go the whole day w/o taking off their suit coats.

6. Because those shirts are supposed to be men's underwear.
And underwear is what one wears under one's clothes. Those were always undershirts, not usually worn to be seen, except around the house (and perhaps close to home) on the hottest days. My father always wore one UNDER HIS SHIRT, as I think the men of his generation probably all did.

8. for me.....
I wear a tank or a tee shirt under button up type shirts. I usually leave the top 3 buttons undone (it's a style thing). The tank allows a more comfortable fit of the shirt as oppossed to a tee underneath. I dont sweat alot, so stains isn't a problem.
