Any John Mellencamp Fans??
Edited on Sat Jul-17-04 10:51 PM by AlFrankenFan
Ever since I was little (which ain't sayin' much that was the 90's) I always remember hearin' "Jack and Diane", "Small Town", and "Your Life is Now" and just last year during Edwards' campaign I put a song to a face and became a John Mellencamp fan!

Just wonderin' if there are any DUers who share my love for his music...cause there sure ain't no kid my age who even knows who he is (and in turn I don't know their music idols...like those rappers and those kids...Good Charlotte), and besides they wouldn't be able to appreciate his music!

Oh yeah, and BTW, my favorite songs of his...I love 'em all but my current favs are "Lafayette" and "To Washington" - the latter which i highly recommend just cause it bashes Bush!

6. Yep
I was in college when "Hurts So Good" was a hit. All my punk and new-wave friends hated it; I loved it.

When Pink Houses came out, everybody got religion on ol' Johnny. I was amazed. That period through Scarecrow was some of the best music ever written.

Jack and Diane was incomprehensible to me when I was 24 years old, even though I liked the song. 22 years later, I can't listen to it without wanting to get seriously loaded -- but then I remember that I don't drink.

7. The (other) Man Behind Farm Aid
Willie Nelson gets most of the credit, but Mellencamp was very much involved in organizing the Farm Aid benefit shows, and his reasons were deeply personal. His own family lost their farm in Indiana...

Scarecrow on a wooden cross Blackbird in the barn
Four hundred empty acres that used to be my farm
I grew up like my daddy did my grandpa cleared this land
When I was five I walked the fence while grandpa held my hand

CHORUS:
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
This land fed a nation This land made me proud
And Son I'm just sorry there's no legacy for you now
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow

The crops we grew last summer weren't enough to pay the loans
Couldn't buy the seed to plant this spring and the Farmers Bank foreclosed
Called my old friend Schepman up to auction off the land
He said John it's just my job and I hope you understand
Hey calling it your job ol' hoss sure don't make it right
But if you want me to I'll say a prayer for your soul tonight
And grandma's on the front porch swing with a Bible in her hand
Sometimes I hear her singing "Take me to the Promised Land"
When you take away a man's dignity he can't work his fields and cows

There'll be blood on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
Blood on the scarecrow Blood on the plow

Well there's ninety-seven crosses planted in the courthouse yard
Ninety-seven families who lost ninety-seven farms
I think about my grandpa and my neighbors and my name
And some nights I feel like dyin' Like that scarecrow in the rain

CHORUS:
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
This land fed a nation This land made me proud
And Son I'm just sorry they're just memories for you now
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow

8. That is a wonderful song

I thought that was why.

Edit: On an interesting note, I was going to purchase "Trouble No More" when I was with my conservative father in Pennsylvania. Knowing I could get it for a better price somewhere else and that Mellencamp was a liberal, I decided just to pretend to be interesting in purchasing it at that exact moment.
He asked, "Whatcha lookin' at?"
And I replied, "John Mellencamp's CD."
He kinda backed off, saying, "Oh."
I said, "I figure I can get it for a better price somewhere else."
He said, "Yeah...besides you shouldn't waste your money."
I said, "Oh, it wouldn't be a waste. What, do you have a problem with him?"
Shook up, he said, "I just don't think that he's...uh...particularly...good."
At that moment I decided to stop for the sake that he was my ride home and I wanted to live, because I was about to shout out, "Oh, is it because he's a LIBERAL and that he cares about others unlike YOU?!"

It's funny how people judge musicians based on their political affiliations. I sure don't, I'm a fan of Charlie Daniels for god sakes! But it makes me wonder what he did with those Dixie Chick CDs he used to have...I'd sure love 'em. :)
