I Flipped Out on a Security Guard at work -Rant-

I work for a large company that employees around 1000 people.
The security guard who watches the back lot parking area, where I park, stopped me
in the hall and asked me, "When are you going to empty the ashtray in your car, it's getting kind of full".

:WTF:

And I snapped

I told him it was none of his business and I would empty it when I am ready to, I will pile
them as goddamn high as I want to.

I wish that is all had to worry about, the ash tray in my car is about the last thing on my list of concerns
right now.

I park in an area that is not seen by the public or our customers.
I think the interior of my car is private property even when parked in their lot.
I am tired of being hassled by @55#0!&5 in uniforms.

Am I over reacting?

2. Is it a question of security?
Does your ashtray pose a threat to the safety of the employees, the property of they company or the public at large?

No?

Then the damed rent-a-cop should mind his own f***ing business!

and some almost stalk people. Checking to make sure nobody is lurking in a back seat before quitting time would be one of the few legitimate reasons to look into employee cars for a security guard. That would be nice but people should always check themselves before getting int heir cars.

Noticing details as small as cigarette butts in and ashtray might just indicate the guard was, indeed, spending too much time 'investigating' a car for no particular reason. There are some strange people (and predators) in all walks of life. Worrying about offending someone is not a good reason to not call someone on inappropriate behavior or crossing boundries they have no business crossing.

he told the poster to empty his fucking ashtray. do you *really* think that vehicular ashtray inspections were written into rent-a-pig's job description?

this is a clear incident of an attempt to abuse his authority; typical deputy-dawg.

don't let a blanket "liberal" understanding of the workers-of-the-world cloud your mind to the day-to-day. this moran wd scab a picket line for a pinkerton dime.

less you be mistaken for a leftier-than-thou liberal diletante.

"You give liberals a bad name"

25. Looks like a lot of people are judging on this thread
Just because he made one comment, the original poster feels like she is being harrassed.

And now apparently she is the only one who can judge and people like myself who don't look down on people because they are a security guard gets all the flack.

I'm for the little guy and people who judge people should not if they don't want to be judge themselves.

30. it was a ridiculous comment
outside the purview of his job. google "color of law." this mope put his job, & the security contract,in jeopardy over his self-righteous "officialness". if he keeps it up, he can look fwd to unemployment.

if a fellow employee, NOT wearing a cheap, stamped metal badge, had made that comment to me, i might haver offered to feed him the detritus. given these circumstances, i wd have explained to this under-trained "cops" watcher the extreme limits to his authority, & hand carried him to his supe for an explanation.

generalizations about under-dogs are, @ best, naive. lynndie england was an underdog. she deserves as severe punishment as the upper-dogs that allowed her viciousness to find expression.

generalizations may be comforting, but they hold as much truth as organized religion.

going to kick this in the a.m.; think you need to reappraise your liberal "superiority" & take a good look # the real word.

then consider a PM apology to the (just as valid) liberal you've insulted & degraded, Big Dog.

or you can give a shot @ your sophomoric dialectics w/me, if you like.

37. PMs between myself & True American
Edited on Mon Jul-19-04 09:05 AM by jukes
i PM'd TA w/ a copy of the above post, since he either ran away or went nigh-night before replying. rather than an open, public address to my post, i got this wimpy PM in response:

"you should be ashame of yourself comparing this worker to Lyndie England. There is no way this guard's action even approaches prisoner abuse and rape.

You need to get a grip. The security guard was only trying to have a conservation. He is trained to be observant. If the person felt she was being singled out she should of not snapped but ask him what was the purpose of that comment."

my PM in response to TA's follows:

"i never feel shame. because i *think* before i speak, & never let my emotions control my behavior.

i did NOT compare the two persons, except in the very general way of abusing authority. since i'm a retired fed agent, *I* know whereof i speak. Did you bother to research "color of law', or let your emotions control your response, rather than objectively view this matter.

there are levels of abuse of authority. you said you always take the side of the underdog: england fits that classification as well as the tin star dictator you feel the need to defend. the point being, either you're an apologist for england, or you mis-spoke

my point was: this security guard had NO business reprimanding an employee for failing to empty a car ashtray. he's a shitbully, hiding behind his own image of self-importance. he, too, is ruled only by his emotional needs. in the posters shoes, i wd have frogmarched this little napolean into the guard shack, written a letter to the head of security, & demanded a written response on the investigation/punishment for his obvious infraction. i doubt it's his 1st incident & cd very well lead to a responsible & emotionally stable adult filling his vacant slot.

can you *honestly* admit you wdnt tolerate this sort of abuse of authority? i seriously doubt you wd, i just think you like to pick fights when you're safely hiding behind a keyboard. & feel superior when you can slap-&-run.

if you wd cow before this pocket bully, you're not a liberal, you're just a victim who can't stand up for himself eye to eye.

on the other hand, you absolutely should feel shame for allowing yourself to feel superior to another liberal for defending him/herself. true liberals are NOT overcooked pasta-pacifists, they FIGHT injustice.

if you had a pair, you wd have answered my post publicly, & taken your public asskicking w/grace. my PM was, after all, a copy of a public post. i think i'll resurrect the thread, post your whiney milquetoast reply, and this riposte. a touch of public humiliation might do you some good. probably not, you faux-liberal, lofty-libby punk.

you owe the orig poster an apology for disrupting his/her thread w/ a load of judgmental pseudo-lib fecal matter, you emotional twit."

i WILL NOT stand by while some1 insults an actual liberal, standing up for him/herself, for not whimpering in fear before an abusive & frustrated security guard, merely because he's of the working class. *and* i will always make these private bullshit responses public: if TA thought i was wrong in my public post, TA shd have the courage of his convixions & called me out publicly. i challenge TA to defend his irrational, emotionally-spurred, disruptive interference in the public forum. but i suggest he review his shopworn pamphlets on marxian dialectics 1st, & be well prepared to get his/her feelings hurt.

I've suspected since reading TA's first post in this thread that he might be a disruptor.

12. It seems to me that if
he was trying to start up a friendly conversation with you, there are better ways to do it than by saying your car is dirty. He could have said, "Hey, how you doin'?" Or, "How 'bout them Broncos?" Or the age old classic, "My the weather we've been havin' eh'?"

If he was on a power trip then good for you for standing up for yourself. If he wasn't, well, maybe he'll think of a better approach next time than insulting someone.

I work with security guards and most of them are alright. I've run across a couple in my time that were being asses, but they are few and far between. I think they are just like everybody else in society. Some people are assholes and some aren't. Don't let one comment get in the way of you treating these people like you would everyone else.

A guy at work was fired for having a half a joint in his ashtray! I guess they don't have anything better to do than walk around the lot and peer into peoples cars.
I work at a tire factory and these security guards are for the most part wannabe cops/swat team types. Shortly after the world trade center attack they started wearing black BDU pants and fatigue shirts. I asked one of the security supervisors if they had started a rent a cop swat team- he didn't get the humor. They also put out a memo that said "due to homeland security issues" you can't ...blah,blah,blah.... what a joke!

21. You might be over reacting
It might be part of his job to check out all the cars in the lot. I worked for a company where the guards did it regularly because of theft. An employee was stealing computer parts during his lunch hour and stashing them in his car. The guard also maybe just making sure you aren't going to dump the ashtray out in the parking lot. They might have had problems with people throwing their trash in the lot. Don't be so hard on the guy, even if he might be a jerk...Security guards are underpaid and an easy target for everyone's anger.

What was this guy's problem, anyway?! What business is it of his if you have a full ashtray?! As I was explaining to a friend of mine, who is a neophyte in politics, I see the big difference between liberals and conservatives as liberals live and let live, while the conservatives want to tell everyone else what to do. This is a good case in point. I don't blame you for being annoyed. I would have been.:grr:

Yes you were over reacting. You should address it with him and his superior. If you don't get an answer you like take it up the chain. You park on private property. When you park your car there you give the company full permision to let the security guards look for anything in plain view.

If you don't like the answer the company gives you, your free to park somewhere outside the company parking lot and walk or ride the bus.

You should also consider giving up smoking. It is not a healthy habit.
