Lightning shots from Arizona (Oro Valley area just outside of Tucson)
Edited on Sun Jul-18-04 11:14 AM by noahmijo
I put these up last night but it was really late so hardly anyone was on to see them so I decided to repost them again for your viewing pleasure. :hi:

As you can see we had a bit of a storm out here...

2. Damn...
Do you normally get weather like that? I remember driving west, leaving Albuquerque and heading toward Arizona one time. South of us was a big cloud pumping out lightning. It was sunny everywhere else, but lightning there. I never see weather like that here in NY. I think it's cause it was open plain there.

3. During this time of year it is normal

I honestly don't know if our northern neighbors (Phoenix) get like this during monsoon season, but in the Tucson area starting around July 8-9th we have about a 2 month period of some pretty severe storms which pretty much constitutes our rainfall for the entire year.

It gets mean, I used to live in NY when I was a little kid, and I know as much rain as it gets you don't typically see huge pounding "big ol fat rain" or lightning bolts slamming your friggin house! (yes my house actually got hit one year!)

4. Was there damage?
The nastiest rain I ever experienced was in Maryland this May. We were driving along and there was a huge cloud in front of us. Then it rained. Then it rained like I have never seen rain. Then I start hearing dings on my car. All I can say is that there was tons of hail hitting every part of my car. It was like the burial scene in Kill Bill 2 (if you saw it you know what I mean). 5 minutes later were in the clear. It was sick. I thought I was going to see a cow fly by.

5. When lightning hit my house it actually took a chunk of the top of the
cement wall that lines the front of the house.

We do get heavy hail as well sometimes during this season. I remember 2 years ago while I was at my college library I took a look outside and it looked like the world was going to come to an end or something, and it started hailing big time.

The hail created hundreds of little dents on the top of my car which to this day I haven't repaired (estimated cost to repair $1000)

Since the dents don't constitute a severe repair (like engine service or something) and since I'm still a broke college student I'm going to wait to get a job before I have those dents fixed.

8. Great shots! I read that you folks in the 'baked apple' got a doosey last
night!

I do miss those storms! Except the one that hit fast when I was camping on Mt. Bigalow. Had to abandon everything and just get out. Next morning, went up and my tent was still there but a tree 10 feet away had been hit by lightening. Glad it rained hard that storm too.

Thanks for the pictures. Can almost smell that wonderful scent of rain and creosote and feel the lift from all those negative ions.
