What is the leanest meat available? |
|
I was looking at my ground turkey, and one pound contains 100% USDA recommended allowance for fat. :scared:
I'd love to go back to eating soy products, but the ground turkey is 1/4th the price.
Are there ground meats that are low in fat content that don't cost $4/pound?
Thx!

and if you have neighbors who raise milk goats, you can get a billy fairly cheap. Let him be your organic lawn mower for the season, and when it gets cold, have a goat roast.

3. You can also reduce the amount of fat |
|
in a higher fat ground meat by rinsing it in a colander after you brown it.

I dig it and shall do it.
It's goofy that I eat 105% daily allowance of saturated fat yet I've dropped 6 pounds in the last month. (some exercise and a bit change as to when I eat made all the difference; big breakfast, small snacks, big lunch, small snack, reasonable dinner to top at 1800 or fewer calories... not easy to do every day and there are days when I feel sick and woozy until I nibble on something, but it's working.)

Venison is so lean that, when I get it ground, I have the processor add a small amount of beef suet just so I can cook it without burning it.

not just ground turkey, but ground turkey breast - that's what's low in fat. Yes, it is expensive, so watch for sales.

9. I Have a Problem With Ground Turkey |
|
Edited on Sun Jul-18-04 02:49 PM by Labor_Ready
I think it's a severe gastrointestinal reaction to an amino acid in the turkey dark meat. Suffice to say, you don't want to be downwind after I've eaten it. I went home for lunch one day and ate spaghetti with sauce made from ground turkey - lots of garlic. Delicious! I was in a HAZMAT class that day, and everyone was taking turns putting on fully-encapsulated chemical suits.
Later in the afternoon, I felt the unmistakable signs of impending flatulent release. I retreated to a corner of the large room for this event, but there wasn't enough air in the room to dilute the aroma. The crowd of people began parting like the Red Sea as air currents carried my effluence their way. I blamed it on Scotty, who had just taken off the hood of his chemical suit  Scotty emerged from his suit to find everyone lining the wall, giving him an evil glare. 'I didn't do it!" he insisted.

but I've had similar experiences with ground turkey when no garlic was involved. Suffice to say, my wife doesn't purchase ground turkey any more. Never. Ever.
