which gender is most offended by the term "girlie men?"
Is it more or less offensive than "bitch dudes," or "lady bastards?"

Arnold has such... depth.

1. Ahnold is stupid
always has been. I've never cared for him, and I don't care for his appellations.

2. It was certainly a misogynistic remark regardless.
Expressing the idea that women are weak.

3. The same thing happens on DU....
when some spineless politician, such as *, is referred to as a "pussy".

14. None of us are a sitting Governor or
speaking in public at an official function.

Arnold has become very one dimensional, using action figure
slogans as an expression of gubernatorial leadership. Yawn.

His efforts to "balance the budget" have, for the most part,
been nothing more than Grey Davis proposed to do when he was
governor. Modest cutbacks, raid the local municipalities,
and float a big bond measure and restructure the debt.
In addition, Arnold agreed to not press for the majority of
damages against the criminal energy traders that caused some
of the problem in the first place, reducing the claim from the
$9 Billion to less than $2 Billion. And even $9 Billion may be
less than 50 percent of the direct costs, it's certainly a small
fraction of the indirect costs of the energy trading scam.

So, yeah, we can call Arnold on his use of "girly men" when referring
to lawmakers from the democratic party.

Especially his wife...she came from some strong stock.

And if you take away my facial hair, genitals, and deep voice, well, I'd be a gender confused pissed off girly man. That's worse than being offended. ?

12. No, then it'd be
a state of medical reality, not a gender insult.

Not sure what your point is with that.

...but obviously some people ARE rather offended. I just think it illustrates how silly and one-dimensional Ahnold is. Please excuse if I've given any offense! Certainly none was intended.

11. I feel offended by it
because it implies women are weak.

But when I say offended, take it with a grain of salt. I've got bigger fights to fight, so I don't lose a lot of blood pressure meds over it or anything.

15. Here is what some of the Democrats are saying about his remarks
Governor calls foes 'girlie men'
Democrats are outraged over the remark directed at them, calling it sexist and anti-gay.
By Gary Delsohn -- Bee Capitol Bureau

Published 2:15 am PDT Sunday, July 18, 2004

snip...

"About a fourth of the Senate are women," Sen. Gloria Romero, a Los Angeles Democrat who's been working with the Schwarzenegger administration on prison reform, said in a telephone interview. "This is offensive for women. It is offensive to gays and lesbians in the Legislature because of the way that term historically has been applied. 'Girlie man' is a negative term. It is inappropriate for a governor or anybody to name-call someone who, whether he likes it or not, has been elected by a majority of people in a district to represent them."

Assemblywoman Sarah Reyes, D-Fresno, said Schwarzenegger should issue an apology for the "crude and inappropriate" comment. "I think we're seeing the real Arnold Schwarzenegger," she said. "It was alleged in the campaign that he was sexist and that he behaved inappropriately toward women and had no respect for them, and now we're seeing it's true."

Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco and chairman of the five-member Legislative Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Caucus, called the governor's remark a "third-grade insult."

"By playing to certain voters' discomfort with gender and sexuality, the governor has exposed himself as a divider, not a uniter," Leno said.

16. Now, now people

we need to remember that Ahnold's PLAYING a Governor, it's not like he really is one.

We've been thos route before, remember Ronnie ?

These guys sometimes have trouble separating real life from reel life.

Of course, in this case, it is a bit bizarre that he's imitating someone imitating him.

19. it IS a 3rd rate insult
Now calling a guy a Sissy Bitch (which I have used, to my shame) is a great way to get into a fight.
Yes, I was pretty stupid when I was young.
Now, if someone called me that, I would just laugh and ask "Is THAT all you got?"

20. unbelievable
The repugs continue to elevate the "tone".

It is just like a cartoon character has been elected Governor of CA.

I would be offended by the 'girlie men' comment, but it is too stupid. Instead I will roll my eyes dramatically.

24. it originally derives from a series of SNL skits....
Hans and Franz, or something like that, I think. At least that's the first time I heard it. The important thing is that it was originally coined as humor.

23. of course it is, but...
...my post was actually intended as "humor by misdirection," i.e. focusing on the sexist nature of the comment when the real lameness lies in its stupidity and superficiality. Maybe some people got it, but overall I've been pretty amazed that many actually found it offensive rather than merely pathetic. Arnold simply underscores his..., well, his "Arnoldness" for want of a better word.....
