1. The way most people who own them do not posess the skills
necessary to drive/park them.

"WTF? How did he cover NINE PARKING SPOTS with a Suburban?!?"

2. Why do they always park at the end of a row in a parking lot?
Effectively blocking the safe view of anyone pulling out or pulling in?

8. Because, in some areas, SUVs not only occupy the slots at either
end of a row of parking spaces but also all of those in between. Their proliferation, and the number of the worst (Hummers) out on the road already, is scary. It's also one more symptom of a sick society, as if we needed any more -- the news that we're running out of fossil fuel reserves, and that burning excess amounts is not good news for the planet, is hardly new.

I learned to drive in a full-sized van, and let me tell you, it SUCKED. Although it is funny to watch my friends get terrified when i pull the van exactly into a parking space with no problem, and with hardly slowing down.

As the posessor of a big red thing that throbs powerfully between my legs, I look down upon artificial attempts to inflate one's protective cup size. Be proud of your minuscule appendages, my fellow astronauts!

That and they overwhelmingly tend to include disproportionate numbers of dangerous, inattentive, arrogant drivers...I'm okay, who cares about you.

22. There's something about women in SUVs....
THIS WOMAN is of the opinion that some women in SUVs often become rude and belligerent behind the wheel. I guess the size of the SUV gives them a reason to bully people and makes it easier for them to run over people and ignore traffic laws.

I'm so sick of jerkoff SUV owners who get up behind me on the highway. Its worse than any other driver with their high beams on. Its so blinding. grrr... Some of the new bigger pickup trucks are that way too. I wouldn't mind those so much if the people owning them had a farm or hauled something more than twice a year.

14. The hypocrisy of it all (Re. SPORT Utility Vehicle)
You see these ads where the SUV is taken to the far ends of some beautiful nature spot (mountains, desert, forest, etc.). This is hypocritical at two levels:

1) Most people that own them have never been to a place like that. And if they ever went to National Park or took a hike on foot they'd have no need for a 4WD drive anyway. They all buy them for the looks, and the 'safety' - if I wreck you'll be the one (in your high mpg Honda) that gets creamed (i.e., maimed or killed). Or they think: What if it rains or snows? I would I never be able to drive with just FWD.

2) Gas guzzling SUVs aid to the demise of all those nature spots. And like I said, you don't need an SUV to get there anyway.

31. Second that- the hypocrisy
A TON of the ones I see around here are driven by wealthy or primped-looking women in their 40s or 50s, and they are always alone. You know, the ones whose sandals match their earrings and you can smell their perfume halfway across the parking lot? Yeah. I can definitely see the need for them to drive an offroad vehicle. </sarcasm> Sadly, it seems to be a status symbol. "See? See how much space and gas I can waste?" Ugh.

46. Common misconception about 4WD
Four wheel drive only means that there's drive going to both axles - front and back. It barely helps at all with low-traction situations like snow or rain, because the same side of the vehicle is still getting all of the power.

AWD - all wheel drive - on the other hand, puts power to all wheels directly, and thus helps out a great deal with low-traction situations. Ironically, you can most often find AWD systems on non-SUV vehicles like station wagons or even coupes (Volkswagen offers this on most of their cars).

25. how do I hate thee, let me count the ways
I deplore the gas they use and the obliviousness of the drivers. It's like a billboard you drive that says, "I don't care how much pollution I put out and how much gas I burn."

But I also hate the ugliness. Let's face it, these vehicles are ugly. There is nothing attractive about them, not in the least. They are boxy, massive hulks. The absolute worst one, IMO, is the Cadillac Escalade. When I see those hideous things it is all I can do to keep from bashing out that hideous, gold phony baloney looking grill.

30. dangerous, arrogant, gas-guzzling, wasteful
bad drivers, can't see around them, lizard-brain owners!

And then seeing them smashed along the road because the drivers didn't think that they had to drive safely or slowly since they were in an SUV. One year we saw one spin out on ice, luckily no one was hurt. And today I saw one basically with it's front end smashed to bits and missing a wheel during a rainstorm, proabably since the silly fool refused to slow down and look where he or she was going.

32. Our power was off for hours a few days ago because some shiny new
Escalade attacked a power pole at the end of the street. I have no idea how they possibly managed that -- perhaps it leaped out and surprised them, or perhaps they were shocked, upon hanging up their cell phone, to suddenly find that other people were sharing the road. Regardless, the Escalade was history, with its front end divided neatly in two by the pole. The pole looked fine to me. Maybe the power people just turned it off until they could inspect it.

Yes, SUVs are so safe. Sure, a regular car wouldn't have fared all that well versus an extra-large metal power pole, but what do you think the odds would be that they'd be somewhat less likely than an SUV driver to hit it in the first place?

35. In my So. Calif. suburb
they are mostly driven by women - who steer them with one-hand while clutching a cellphone in the other. (The husbands drive small German sports cars.)
The gargantuan trucks find their way to the kids' school, the mall, the gym, and back home - the driveway of a heavily mortgaged tract mansion. They will never see a dirt road - much less an off-road situation.
You'd think at $2.34 a gallon, which is what gas is going for around here, people would be wising up and downsizing - but I still see new SUVs from hell. A family up the street just got something called an "Armada." (I just love the outdoorsy names of these big unwieldly monsters - the Yukon, Denali...etc....what a crock!)

36. It's two things actually
First it's that way they have of taking up so much space in the parking lot (especially if they don't park exactly right) that when you try to park you are squeezed in. And just *try* to park between two of those monsters!

Second is the way they just think they own the darn road! Pity the poor person who drives a small car when these demons are roving around...you're likely to get squashed like a bug if you don't move quick enough the way some of them act.

43. They are a glaring example...
of how quickly Americans forget the past and repeat the same mistakes...

Big, lumbering, inefficient gas-guzzlers nearly choked the life out of the country in the 70's... we wized up for a decade or so and moved to more efficient, environmentally friendly vehicles.

By the mid 90's the SUV boom was upon us, and it keeps getting worse...

Wake up, assholes! It doesn't matter if it's a '75 Chrysler Cordoba or a 2004 Lincoln Navigator: a gas-guzzler is a gas-guzzler.

49. Back when I lived in Portland
I used to wait for the bus on the street (Burnside) that led out of the West Hills, where many of the rich yuppies lived.

It was rare to see more than one person in an SUV. In fact, the smaller cars were more likely to be carrying passengers.

I once saw a triple threat SUV situation: the driver of a monster SUV shot out of the parking lot across the street and turned left (east) across the lane of westbound traffic, missing one of the eastbound cars by inches, and wouldn't you know it, the driver was jabbering away on a cellphone the whole time.

And don't get me started on the people who buy HumVees. Why don't they just put their house on wheels and drive it around?
