What job would you have now if it was the one you picked as a kid??? |
|
Remember when we were just lil tater tots. Those big folks would ask us what we wanted to be when we grew up.
So if you had the career that you told everyone when you were like 5 or 6 years old - what would you be doing today?
Me - I'd be an Astronaut!!

29. Make that three veterinarians. |
|
I do volunteer with animals at a shelter, and have a house full -- I just wasn't on track, by the time I graduated high school, to get into that long an education.
I also wanted to be a writer, preferably a novelist. I do write, but I was never good enough at that to do anything with it. So I did at least make an attempt.

there was one girl in our class that said she wanted to be a vet, and i asked her- what about when you have to put them to sleep? of course she answered that she would be such a good vet, that she would NEVER have to do that...and she was also going to have a big farm, and take in all the dogs and cats that nobody wanted from the city pound too...

Hm...I can't sing worth a damn (I mean, I can't even be redeemed with heavy production); I'm utterly inexperienced in acting; I'm a clumsy, but functional, swimmer (but I probably could pass the lifeguard test, with a refresher class).
Cook (well, chef) I probably could do, with training, but I wouldn't want to, at least not full time.

It always through people in my upwardly mobile middle class neighborhood for a loop. I loved getting a reaction from all of the old yenta-like ladies who used to ask me this in the elevator... They would look over to my mom, who with a straight face used to say "Whatever she wants to do, I'm sure she'll be great at." We'd laugh SO hard when they got off the elevator at the lobby...

I suppose that being a Rock Star or something is more lucrative...but a Record Producer's work is more rewarding ultimately.
I mean, you can only be a Rock Star for so long before you burn out, or jump.
I've always been better at editing and arranging anyway. Record Producer would be perfect.

When I was a kid I was huge Cousteau fan. Grew up on the ocean, taught myself how to scuba dive, and had a big fascination with sharks. What I didn't have was educational discipline and the confidence that I could do well with the sciences. Basically I was a dreamer who was lazy, liked to party, and didn't have the right priorities. Having said that, my oldest son got his degree in Ocean Engineering. Do you think I influenced him? LOL

I remember having a career day in elementary school, and choosing to be a chemist of some sort, largely because they got to stand around at work instead of busting ass digging ditches in the Texas summer. I mean, the thought of mixing chemicals was way cool, but as a boy in Houston TX in the mid 70s, all i wanted from my future job was that it be climate-controlled. Faintly ironically, i now have neither job nor career nor prospects. but i do have air conditioning.

My grade school was staffed with Charities and Augustinians, and my high school was run by the Sisters of St Joseph: for a while I seriously thought nuns had to go to South America and work with the poor, then come back to the states and give lecture tours. When I was little, I was a kinda forced to be a big tomboy. My two older sisters worked inside our house helping Mom clean, etc. and my two brothers and I were shushed outside to play in the woods all day. I grew up climbing trees and running wild with my brothers but I always wanted to be the dressed up prissy type. I loved dresses with full skirts where I could twirl around and around and dance.
I remember in first grade being asked what I wanted to be when I grew up and I wanted to be a Lady - I guess I was thinking the June Cleaver type.

I would go around on my hands and knees meowing... I'm so ashamed... but I've been around cats my whole life, I wanted to be one.

Never really wanted to work per se, myself.
I just wanted to play all the time. And none of the things I liked to play with could ever really be thought of as a profession.
Race car driver, maybe....but that's about it.

My career counselor told me that the pay was horrible and that I would have to pick up large snakes and worms.
That did me in.

That's what I wanted to be when I was a teenager...I can't remember what I wanted to be back when I was younger.
I had visions of being a lawyer up through my first year of college. Then I realized I just wasn't cut out for it. I went for my BS in Psychology and took a Human Services job with noble intentions of saving people. Not something you want to do if you want to make a living...

oh, hold it, I wasn't. Once I grew out of that, I thought being an extreme skier wouldn't suck.

When we were kids they were always digging up our street. We'd get to know the workers - we were probably a giant pain in the ass - but...
Anyway, whoever was digging in the street, they'd have beer with their lunch - usually quart bottles. Thay had a nickle deposit on them. We's always pester 'til they gave us the bottles so we could get the deposit.
Sure looked like fun , easy work...
