Most Dangerous Jobs
Last night I watched a Discovery Channel special on Alaska crab fishing.

I had no idea that job was so dangerous.

There are specific seasons to harvest the crabs, unfortunately, it is in the dead of winter. The crews/harvesters have to work in sub-zero temperatures against huge dangerous waves in the Bering Sea.

Ships sink just from the weight from accumulation of ice:

And if, by chance, one of those waves sweep you overboard, you're a goner.

1. Hey! I watched that too
I knew that it was one of the most dangerous. You won't mind paying for those crab legs now will ya?

Great series of shows. I don't think I could put up with that level of cold, I loved how the one crew just crashed on the last day not even getting out of their wet clothes.

My wife and I were watching it and none of the $$$ figures they gave seem to make sense or add up. The deckboss says you can make $100K in a week but even the Norwegian brothers crew "only" walked away with what $20K each, not bad mind you but we couldn't make sense of what they were saying. Ever watched a documentary with TWO accountants?

I noticed that the Norwegian decended brothers didn't go out in January. They seemed to be satisfied with what they made in the fall and other seasons.

6. I think the amount you earn is based on the amount of the harvest
and you're right, I don't mind paying for those crabs legs now. :D

Another thing I didn't know was how many varieties of crabs they were.

How can anything so ugly taste so good?

7. I understand what they said about the pay
It just didn't add up that's all I am saying. That one Deckboss said that he did paint the worst picture possible so that they didn't feel like they were fooled into getting on the boat.

Several times the guys said they could make ~$100 K for the week but the most anyone made (of the deck hands) was what $30-35 K?

5. A good book to get
"Working on the Edge" by Spike Walker. Basically, a diary of an Alaska king crab fisherman. Excellent read.

8. I know a guy who worked one season on an Alaskan crabbing boat...
From his accounts, it is every bit as horrible as the Discovery program makes it out to be...

Worse, the advertisements used to recruit young people to work on the boats are quite misleading with regard to the dangers...

12. Ahhnold wouldn't know real work if it stuck him between his anabolic ass
cheeks. I do not mean to glorify these guys. Wrestling crab cages on a frozen deck seems alot more productive than thugging and drugging.

15. 252 boats in the fleet-one death per week average-
Edited on Mon Jul-19-04 11:03 AM by underpants
(ON EDIT) usually a 5 man crew-so you have about a 1 in 1,260 chance of dying each week that you are out there.
