8. I really, really like it.
I don't know how to describe why. It has something to do with

1. linguistics
2. pop culture terminology
3. it refers to something that was on tv when i was coming of age
4. it is precisely descriptive -- as long as you were a fan of "Happy Days" and I think even people who weren't understand what "jump the shark" means as soon as it is applied to one of their own favorite shows

Am I making any sense at all? Can anyone distill these thoughts and present me with a gift of a coherent thought that I can claim as mine? :eyes: at self

22. It jumped the shark when people completely misused it.
e.g. "that show jumped the shark on the first episode."

25. "jump the shark"
refers to when a good television series runs out of ideas and resorts to using bad and stale stories lines just to keep floggin a dead horse.

If a show was never good to begin with then it cannot "jump the shark."

Or an old phrase.

27. When did so-and-so...
Edited on Mon Jul-19-04 01:29 PM by arwalden
... lose its appeal?
... stop being fresh?
... stop being funny?
... quit being clever?
... start sounding so dumb?
... start copying everyone else?
... stop being cutting-edge?
... stop sounding original?
... sell out to big business?
... sell out to politics?
... start being so outrageous?
... start being unbelievable?
... start being boring?
... start looking horrible?

I'd avoid a "catch phrase" entirely. Instead I'd prefer someone to choose words that asked a specific question or make a point by criticizing a specific aspect of whatever/whoever they feel has jumped the fucking shark.

-- Allen

P.S. It's bad enough that it's trite and overused... but I think what annoys me most are the people who think they are being clever about it. I guess if it's new to them, then naturally they might be inclined to believe that it's new for everyone else too. But some others just insist on overusing it irrespective of how hackneyed it is. -- Oh well. It's my problem, not theirs. I know how to solve it.
