Who is the better guitarist? Satriani or Vai.

4. Don't know nothing about guitar personally BUT...

A former good friend was a lead and rhythm guitarist with decent skills and he told me that Vai was the mose technically mystifying guitarist he'd ever heard.

He told me he literally had no idea how Vai made some of the sounds he did. With Satriani, he said he knew how the instrument was being played, but the he could not have done it himself.

I defer to his knowledge, therefore, and cast for Vai.

24. You Need To Listen To Satch More Carefully

His stuff drips with feeling, especially as he carrying the melodies of the songs. His vibrato is to die for.

I like SRV, too, but if you haven't heard the feeling in Satch's playing, you need to listen again.

18. Satch, For Two Reasons

I like his tone better, since it's rounder and smoother.

But, more importantly, i think his exploration of jazz elements (lots of harmonic minors and diminished scales, and the use of modes) is more interesting to my ear.

Vai tends toward incorporating elements of Baroque into his playing, and that just doesn't grab my ear. I like the harmonic envelope to be pushed as far as possible. Satch does that better than Vai. That includes the incorporation of noise into his phrasing. I really like that stuff.

Vai is phenomenal, and i like them both a lot, but i like the moods set by Satch more.

Full Disclosure: I'm a Satch fanatic, and i don't deny it. But, i really do know why i like him so much, and it's not just because he's a shredder. His playing is brilliant, and he can still rock!

Steve Vai is probably the most technically gifted electric guitarist ever.

But, as was once said in another context, it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing.

Vai plays like a machine. Satch has got some human feel to his music. Not as much as, say Steve Vai or Jimi Hendrix did, but you can tell it's a human playing.

"Surfing with the Alien" is a terrific rock guitar album.

They are bedroom gods. Name one of their pupils or fans who've made an impact on the world of music in a way that transcends jacking off their axe with virtuosity. Now list the players that were influenced by the great blues and swing players from the 20th century. You get maybe one generation of guitarists that can swing and play the blues in all of it's forms. After that you get techno geeks whacking their axe like a geeky teenager to downloaded porn. When a motherfucker can say he played in a rock band, a big band, an acoustic jazz ensemble, a funk band, and a r and b organ combo and a country quintet then he can claim to be a virtuouso.

but James Marshall Hendrix was the greatest ELECTRIC guitar player of all time. And Jimmy Page is right there as an overall guitar player. Listen to a relatively new guy namede Eric Sardinas. His latest cd has a guest stint by Vai. Sardinas is good.
