...if your poor-ass grad student of a husband were to get you a birthday present, what would it be?
Contest rules:
1. It has to be good. (i.e. a present that you would like, not necessarily something that your husband actually gave you, e.g. a foosball table)
2. It has to be something a poor-ass grad student could afford. (And no felonies!)
3. Under no circumstances could it be something that you said or hinted that you actually wanted, because despite repeated requests (i.e. begging) from your husband, you refused to actually say or hint about what you actually wanted.

buy three or four bunches of cheap but pretty flowers and split them into 5 or 6 vases and put them around. Light a bunch of candles. Make her dinner. After dinner give her a card with a page torn out from your journal when you first met her about how she swept you off your feet, or a romantic letter that you write between now and then.
Have fun.
Then DAYS later, tell her how it's really no fair that she doesn't drop a poor, sweet guy a hint.

Do the romantic dinner thing with flowers, and the book suggestion is outstanding. Good luck!
