Dr. Who: The Tomb of the Cybermen

1. Whoo boy... There are better selections if you're not a fan of the series

The basic storyline is actually great (1967), but I have certain problems with the production...

You might much prefer "The Seeds of Death" (1969). It's 2 episodes longer but has so much more going for it...

Of course, The Ark in Space, The Robots of Death (1977), The Caves of Androzani (1984), The Pirate Planet (1978), The Stones of Blood (1978), Vengeance on Varos, The Aztecs (1964), The Curse of Fenric (1989) are superlative stories from their respective eras (a show lasting 26 years undoubtedly has many production styles...)

7. "Tomb of the Cybermen" is One of the All-Too-Few Pat Troughton...

...sets that has survived intact. BBC trashed many of the originals before the series acquired its current following.
There has been a worldwide search for copies, ANY copies, of the lost episodes, most of which feature Pat Troughton as the Doctor.

Production is decidedly low-budget, as are all the early episodes.

I really liked Pat Troughton as the Doctor.

(But my favorite Doctor is John Pertwee, especially the episodes
that also featured Roger Delgado as the Master)

Troughton ranks up there with Davison and Colin Baker in persona. (Tom Baker is great but everybody loves him just because... and everybody forgets the others too...)

Early Pertwee was pretty much superlative as well. Especially his first four stories. Very anti-establishment.

Budget is a non-issue for me. Budget merely allows for tastier frosting to be put on the cake. If the cake is made out of sawdust (read Star Wars, (most of) Buck Rogers, (most of) Battlestar Galactica, Knight-Rider, A-Team, et al) then I'm not going to eat it. I love ideas and I love good acting. They can make a 50 cent costume priceless when handled right, and a 5 thousand dollar costume worthless when handled wrong.

on Public TV (NET). The Dr. was John Pertwee. Off and on since then. I think I rented all that Netflix has. If not I will.

You'll easily see how much Trek ripped Dr.Who off in "creating" the Borg.

3. Excellent point... And 'Tomb' is way better in ideas...

I tend to be negative-minded at times.

The basic plot that "Tomb" has is actually better than even "The Best of Both World" (though BOBW is pretty darn good too, despite part 2!)

And we all know Trek would rip off the concept if they get a chance...

The Cybermen were created in 1966. Essentially humanoids who replaced their organic components, apart from essentially the brain, with synethetic prosthetics. "Earthshock", due in September on DVD in the US, is the BEST 1980s Cyberman story...

4. Were the Ferengi "original"?

I know not much ever is, but was there some other show/book that you could point to and say "been there, done that" with that race? I always loved them as they were SO non-Trek in flavor.
