Does this make you more inclined to buy a book from this seller? That book was recommended to me today, and I searched for it on Ebay. That seller has half-clad women modeling all of his books for sale: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=2484888505&category=50442&sspagename=WDVW

that I'm also NOT uninclined to buy her book because of that picture. Hell, I've had great books suggested to me by their author while they were in the nude. (Pagan festivals...those who've been know what I'm talking about.)

If you have to use sex to sell the book, maybe it's not that good of a book.
Not that I have anything against half-clad women or anything...;-)

11. DU Men? I'm a gay male. Am I not a man? Your comment is homophobic. |
|
Edited on Mon Jul-19-04 07:07 PM by HypnoToad
How about adding gay men and heterosexual women to your list? Or bisexual men and women?
But I digress from the point of my response with pedantic political correctness: I have nary a clue as to what the book is about and I stared at the cover for 5 minutes. Working at the edge of a waterfall it seems to be... what are the workers doing? Does this book have a point, or it so limited in scope to people wearing bright orange next to a cliff face? If I gave a hoot, I'd read the synopsis on the back and likely not buy the book anyway.
But for those inclined, they have the benefit of having something else to look at that they DO understand, should the cover make no sense to them.
Given the size of the book compared to the size of the flaunting female figure, the eyes of ANY human are more likely to guide in her direction anyway.
This advert is not about the book. It's about a fit and trim woman with a leather bra concealing her boobies.

but I "assumed" that gay men wouldn't be interested in a half-clad woman.
It didn't occur to me to address bisexual men.
Besides -- I can only get so many adjectives in the headline.
on edit: Jesus fucking christ. Can you put some things in proper perspective without pointing fingers at people?????

21. Forgive me, I was being unduly harsh! |
|
You are correct, gay men wouldn't rather be interested in the lady.
And you're right on the adjectives. :-)
I also just came from GD where there's a big argument about political correctness...
Actually, gay men and hetero women might give the most unbiased answers since the advert doesn't affect them the way it does toward hetero men and lesbian women. (and bis of either flavor) And while many hetero men and lesbian women would still say the lady, uh, distracts from the item for sale, they'd still be drooling.
I've never understood why a person would buy something just because a glamour model happened to be holding it. That isn't logical. For example: "That hot chick is standing in front of a car! I'm going to buy the car!" or "Hey look, that Greek god over there with a bowling ball sized basket is selling this can of earwig excrement. Let's buy 50 pounds of it just because he's good looking with a Guinness-worthy package!"
Of course, if Michael Moore posed on the set of his movie F911, I'd probably go see it because I know what he's about. He's a cutie but I know that if I see the movie, he's not going to sleep with me - yet alone even know I exist except as a statistic. :-)

I find these sort of ads tacky and repelling. The Gebco auto insurance company runs tv ads with one guy and a dozen 3/4 naked women dancing around like sluts and singing about the benefits of Gebco. I wouldn't get Gebco if it were fifty cents a year. I also would never buy a car from that annoying Foreign Motors guy. (If you are from the Mid Atlantic you might be familiar with these two)
If I already like a product I will buy it regardless of the ads. If I'm shopping for something new an ad I like won't sway me to buy it, but an ad I hate very well might repell me.

I think that's pretty silly!
Books are intellectual things and have nothing to do with the body, unless they are erotica or porn.
On the other hand, I could see being swayed to buy a motorbike or a car by a half-clad model. MAYBE. Or at least, those things seem to go together better.
NOT that half-clad women are "objects" but, the thing that they're selling, a car, is a material thing, and the thing they are "selling" (sexiness) is also a material thing.
But I don't get it, with books.
