1. Well, I have a mathematics PhD - pretty geeky if u ask me! |
|
One of the better compliments I often receive is, "My, you don't look like a mathemetician!"
I always say, "Thank You!"

4. Why are math people so freaking WEIRD? |
|
Try this experiment out:
Next time you're on a university campus, and you're next to some complete weirdo in the elevator who touches his pockets (checking on his calculator?) and talking to himself, ask him what his major is or what he teaches. Chances are, it's math. Why is this?

8. Well, that is certainly the stereotype, |
|
but many are fairly normal except for being generally introverted and too nice for the sake of pleasing others over themselves (read: doormat). I consider those types A+ pussies, but then again, I am kind of a renegade in all ways. My advisor is a superstar in algebra worldwide, but he is not dorky - however he has a cold introverted Russian demeanor that intimidates the fuck out of most people. I am glad I had him as an advisro because he was so brilliant and he made me stronger with his toughness.

12. Perhaps I should have mentioned |
|
I am an English person (as opposed to a math person). There definitely seems to be a difference between the two breeds. Literature-types are certainly as dorky as math-types, but I just don't see them wearing it on their sleeves. There has been a running rivalry between the two opposites at every university I've ever been to, largely, I suspect, due to a complete inability to comprehend -- much less respect -- the other's field.
I find that most people are fairly normal except for being generally intorverted and too nice for the sake of pleasing others over themselves. We're all pussies, at least on occasion.

5. That's 'cuz you're from the "golen age" of role-playing |
|
First popularized by Gygax and Co. in the 1980's. You've grown up now, yet still keep it in the closet. Personally, it would be easier for me to tell the world that I was gay than it would be to tell the folks from work that I still RP on Saturday afternoons.
The average age of our group is married, with children, and thirty-two years of age. Hey, that DOES feel good, doesn't it?

I even remember my first character (human cleric) and module he played in ("Village of Hommlet"). You're right, it was a truly golden age.
I read an article that said that among the folks who still play D&D, many are very successful and haven't fallen into the society-perceived "geek trap" of 30-somethings still living with their folks, working at comic book stores and being painfully single.
Say it loud! I'm geek and proud!!

No that doesn't mean attaching stuff to a motherboard, I built the motherboard and hand-soldered a BIOS out of diodes.

26. I have two bookcases full of scifi -- |
|
I go to Half Price Books on the days they have paperback sales (usually 1/3rd off the regular 1/2 cover price). I look for old books I don't have, and seek out the oldest usable editions (because they have a lower cover price). I've gotten tons of Heinlein, Sturgeon, Asimov, LeGuin, etc., for 18 to 67 cents a pop.

Good reading-except for the Heinlein IMO. Never could read his stuff. But that's me, and this is America, and all that. However, if you find any first edition Philip K. Dick, let me know!
