What music have you listened to lately?
Edited on Mon Jul-19-04 08:17 PM by mvd
CDs:

Ace Of Bace - The Sign: somewhat fun, but the beats get too similar. B- or 2 1/2 stars out of 4 at most. And this is from someone who had the 80s influence my music taste.

Cindy Alexander - Smash: excellent pop/rock/folk album! Check it out. Deserves a lot of exposure - older pop/rock stars can't seem to find room. :-(

Bad Religion - Empire Strikes First: this is definitely high quality pop/punk! Melodic, but edgy and has well-directed vitriol without lots of swearing.

Other music:

Ashlee Simpson - Autobiography (from the full album listening party) I really wanted to like this album after liking the song "Pieces Of Me." But after hearing the whole thing, unfortunately I'd much rather just buy the single. And this is from someone who is a fan of Avril, Michelle Branch, Vanessa Carlton, and others like them.

Samples from Maria Mena - White Turns Blue: Enjoyable and distinctive pop/rock. Guess this is the album I'll be looking for tomorrow instead. :-)

Jesse Malin - The Heat.
I like it a lot.

Fastball - Keep Your Wig On - it's ok. Not bad, not great. Basic pop.

Bright Eyes, Hanson's Underneath, Maria Mena, Teitur, Ben Jelen, Ingram Hill, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Brand New, Motion City Soundtrack Phish and Kara's Flowers/Maroon 5.

Also an unnatural amount of The Smiths and Nirvana. Hmm.

8. Do you like that Maria Mena music?
From what I've heard, it's a sure thing for me. I thought that about Ashlee Simpson's CD, too, but then Ashlee is related to Jessica. :-) I had to have a last listen, and I'm glad I did.

9. I liked her stuff.
I'm not huge on that type of pop but she was unique enough for me to give a listen to, and I was surprised that I liked it as much as I did.

ugh, i cannot stand ashlee simpson. i watched her show the other day. i hate how she pretends to be a punk and then comes out with the music she does... kinda like a less pissed off version of avril lavigne. ;)

11. Ashlee must be bad if I don't like her
Her voice has an annoying rasp on too many songs. Ashlee's stuff is also generic. I just bought on iTunes the one song I liked.

I think we're closer than you think when it comes to pop. I also like Hanson, Goo Goo Dolls, Maria Mena, and Michelle Branch. There's room to agree to disagree on others. ;-)

7. In the past week...
Massive Attack - "Blue Lines"

Tricky - "Pre-Millenium Tension"

White Zombie - "La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Vol. 2"

Einstürzende Neubauten - "Ende Neu"

Barry Adamson - "As Above So Below"

Soul Coughing - "Ruby Vroom"

Pixies - "Doolittle"

Recoil - "Liquid"

Ministry - "The Land of Rape and Honey"

Tori Amos - "Strange Little Girls"

and some of Daniel Barenboim's performances of Beethoven's piano sonatas (right now the "Hammerklavier" is my favourite).

As you can see, I tend to have somewhat eclectic and occasionally obscure tastes in music...

24. One kick
I seem to be confused about the Ashlee Simpson CD. Heard it again, and it sounded in between how I felt originally and last night. Maybe I let a bad review get to me, which is rare indeed. At any rate, it's an inconsistent CD and pretty generic. 2 1/2 stars out of 4 at most. But possibly a guilty pleasure.

29. Just bought the Ashlee Simpson and Maria Mena CDs
Edited on Wed Jul-21-04 03:52 PM by mvd
Reviews:

Ashley Simpson - Autobiography: I have a bearing on this one now. It's very inconsistent, but was buyable for the songs I like. "Pieces Of Me" and "Love Makes The World Go Round" are perfect pop. "Love Me For Me" is spunky, and "Unreachable" has very good lyrics about the struggles in a relationship. "Shadow" is pretty and different than the rest of the songs. Also, "Autobiography" is pretty irresistible. On the negative side, "La La" has been done before, so it just sounds silly. But at least it has a better beat than "Surrender." "Surrender" sounds aimed at teens who aren't quite ready for Hole's music. "Better Off" is complete filler. "Giving It All Away" sounds, well, too bubblegum pop for me. "Nothing New" and "Undiscovered" have guitars that are way too sterilized for pleasant listening. Finally, Ashlee's voice has grown on me, but she needs some training for the verses. Overall, this CD gets a C+.

Maria Mena - White Turns Blue: This one is brilliant! Beautiful, mature folk/pop songs like "Fragile (Free)" and "Sorry" are here along with surprisingly hard songs like "Take You With Me" and "Your Glasses." The lyrics are more introspective and go deeper than usual for a pop/rock CD. And her voice is quirky and has some Alanis, but she's not an Alanis clone vocally. This CD gets at least an A.

31. While I was teaching at Choir Camp
a group of my colleagues sang "The Lighthouse's Tale by 'Nickel Creek' for the faculty talent show.

It was fantastic. I'm now listening to all the Nickel Creek I can find on Rhapsody. Progressive Bluegrass is a very interesting genre, and a welcome change in listening habits for me.
