Anime Fans...I need your opinions

Is GENESHAFT any good? It's starting up tonight on G4-Tech TV, but I'm starting to run out of room on my DVD recorder's memory.

2. In about an hour and a half
12:30am ET / 9:30pm PT

with a repeat at 4:30am ET / 1:30am PT.

BETTERMAN is on before it, but I missed the start of that show, so I'm waiting for the repeats before I watch it.

5. I have no idea

I know there's a lot of fans here. If you put everyone's name on a list that have posted on anime, I'd say it would be a significant amount.

What's funny is that I'm just getting back into anime. Oh, I flirted with it a bit a year back, but I've grown tired of the same-old-same-old of most (but not all) American comics, so I now have the time and money for a new hobby.

I still read US comics, but all the writers I like are always collected in TPB form. Marvel and DC's TPB printing is much faster than it was just a few years ago. Now you can buy a TPB collection just a month or two after it's been printed in the monthlies--and no ads and a better quality of paper (usually).

So, I'm branching out a bit and getting back into Anime. Good thing is I've kept my ears up listening for good material to see over the past few years, even when I wasn't watching new shows.

Which "generation" of a fan are you?

1 would be Astroboy and Kimba
1 and a half would be Speed Racer
2 would be G-Force and Yammatto
3 would be Robotech and Voltron
4 Pokemon
5 Now

I'm second gen.

6. Go, Speed Racer, go Speed Raer, go Speed Racer GOOOO!
Combine the Speed Racer Gen w/ the G-Force Gen, and you would have Argumentus.

And how dare you compare Robotech to Voltron. That shit's just not right. Just not right at all. {in a snuff, pouting}

I do admit freely that I'm not particularly a devotee of anything --Dr. Who, Star Trek, Anime, et ct. -- because I have too much interest in everything.v Trade paper backs are too goddamned expensive for me to be a devotee of anything.

7. Oh, I'm not comparing them
I'm just talking about time-frames in which those shows hit America.

8. Funny thing is
many TPB are coming out cheaper than you would have to spend if you bought the titles each month.

And if you get them from an online store, like Amazon or others, you can usually get the TPBs at 30% off the suggested retail price. Buy two or three at one time ($25 and over) and you get free shipping.

Here comes 'Speed Racer' -- the movie

Vaughn to play Racer X
Friday, June 25, 2004 Posted: 8:22 AM EDT (1222 GMT)

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Chim Chim must be doing back flips. Warner Bros. is back on track with development of a live-action film adaptation of the popular Japanese-made cartoon series "Speed Racer," the studio said Thursday.

The "Speed" project, idling in Warner's slow lane for about a decade, shifted back into high gear after actor Vince Vaughn ("DodgeBall") sold the studio on his own concept for the movie, with Vaughn cast as the title character's mysterious big brother, Racer X, a studio spokeswoman said.

Entertainment trade paper Daily Variety reported that the studio was receptive to Vaughn's vision because it focused on character development and a family story in lieu of potentially costly racing scenes.

A previous incarnation of the project had director Julien Temple at the helm with Johnny Depp on board to star, but Variety said that version stalled over budget considerations.

The Warner Bros. spokeswoman said no other talent was yet attached to the project, and producer Joel Silver ("The Matrix"), who owns feature rights to "Speed Racer," is currently shopping for a screenwriter. Vaughn also will hold executive producer credit.

It could be worse. Read the background to the project making it to this point.

16. live action anime
A friend sent me this link: http://www.casshern.com/ It's for a live action version of an old anime series (from the 70's I think). The trailer looks cool. It's all in Japanese of course. Hope it makes it to the North American market. When I first checked out the link, I followed another link which led me to discover that there is of all things a live action Sailor Moon series currently running in Japan. It is possible to get downloads of the episodes. Careful of the search string you use - that combination of words gets you to some very distasteful sites if you aren't paying attention.

About the Speed Racer - Anime in the hands of Hollywood? After what they did to poor old Godzilla - I wouldn't hold out much hope.

I can't answer the original question as I am currently into "shojo" anime. As for the question of "generation" - I'm 1 (Astroboy).

15. The Anime Series that best lends
itself to a live action conversion would be "Cowboy Bebop." Especially if someone like Michael Mann directed it. Ving Rhames could be Jet. Kate Beckinsale could be Faye Valentine.

17. IMHO neither especially good nor especially bad
Edited on Tue Jul-20-04 04:15 AM by Kellanved
Saw it some time ago, didn't like it.

The cgi isn't bad, the boot-up sequence kinda cool, the discussions of the problems of a cloned society are supposed to be deep, the mecha ...

There is nothing really new in the series.
