The importance of a pie in the face. (rant)
Sometimes a thing will stick in my throat until I hock it up publicly. This is one of those time.

I am prone to depression. Every so often a wave of gloom passes through me and I really have no choice but to go with it. There is a simple tell, a sign that I’m in deep trouble. I lose my sense of humor.

When that happens I am no longer myself. I am the depression. I am not a person; I am the sum total of every problem I face, small and large, public and private. When the humor leaves I have abdicated my identity and turned over control of my life to my worst aspect.

The only reason I bring it up is that one of our resident fools has been “accused” of being silly and frivolous. As a comic writer and a lifetime student of humor all I can say is of course he is! And bless him for it!

The minute we relinquish our sense of humor we cease to be ourselves. Throughout history the function of the humorist, the fool, the clown has been to safeguard our perspective; to remind us that, in the long run, the importance we place on our problems, our own bloated sense of self-importance is passing. What is and should always be toward the front of our agenda is humanity. Lose that and the rest is pointless.

I’m not saying, “Lighten up.” I’m saying that, in these contentious and depressing times, humor is more important than ever, and it is important to occasionally stop and recognize the fool. To do so doesn’t diminish the importance of the issues we face. It’s actually quite the opposite. It says that what we face is so powerful, so important, that we need to check in every so often and recharge our batteries with a laugh. After that we can approach the problems with a renewed sense of perspective.

They are closer to priests in my estimation than…well, priests. They are the keepers of who we are, whether they want the gig or not.

9. Problem is you've got to hold it under a light for an hour...
Or it won't glow.

Just sits there. Like a pile of...well, you know.

14. Ah, the one subject I missed!
I didn't realize people were still trolling for him around here. Hell, even the hard core Nadarites I know have given him the heave-ho.

I think these trolls just like to start trouble, what do you think? ;-)

2. Rarely rarely comest thou spirit of delight
Edited on Mon Jul-19-04 10:44 PM by Hoping4Change
Wherefore hast thou left me now
Many a day and night?
Many a weary night and day
'Tis since thou art fled away.

How shall ever one like me
Win thee back again?
With the joyous and the free
Thou wilt scoff at pain.
Spirit false! thou hast forgot
All but those who need thee not.

As a lizard with the shade
Of a trembling leaf,
Thou with sorrow art dismayed
Even the sighs of grief
Reproach thee, that thou art not near,
And reproach thou wilt not hear.

Let me set my mournful ditty
To a merry measure
Thou wilt never come for pity,
Thou wilt come for pleasure
Pity then will cut away
Those cruel wings, and thou wilt stay.

I love all that thou lovest,
Spirit of Delight!
The fresh Earth in new leaves dressed,
And the starry night;
Autumn evening, and the morn
When the golden mists are born.

I love snow and all the forms
Of the radiant frost;
I love waves, and winds, and storms,
Everything almost
Which is Nature's, and may be
Untainted by man's misery.

I love tranquil solitude,
And such society
As is quiet, wise, and good
Between thee and me
What difference? but thou dost possess
The things I seek, not love them less.

I love Love--though he has wings,
And like light can flee,
But above all other things,
Spirit, I love thee
Thou art love and life! O come!
Make once more my heart thy home!

4. Actually a pie in the face can be a very important political statement
Edited on Mon Jul-19-04 11:25 PM by Radical Activist
It has become a tradition. I witnessed a pieing once when a student activist pied the Governor of Illinois. He desereved it and people across the state were thrilled.

But yeah, humor is good too. Good post. :)
