Man On The Moon! --- "Houston, ...the Eagle has landed"
Edited on Tue Jul-20-04 08:09 AM by arwalden
Are you old enough to remember this as vividly as I do?

-- Allen

http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/pao/History/ap11ann/introduction.htm

On July 20, 1969, the human race accomplished its single greatest technological achievement of all time when a human first set foot on another celestial body.

Six hours after landing at 4:17 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (with less than 30 seconds of fuel remaining), Neil A. Armstrong took the “Small Step” into our greater future when he stepped off the Lunar Module, named “Eagle,” onto the surface of the Moon, from which he could look up and see Earth in the heavens as no one had done before him.

He was shortly joined by “Buzz” Aldrin, and the two astronauts spent 21 hours on the lunar surface and returned 46 pounds of lunar rocks. After their historic walks on the Moon, they successfully docked with the Command Module “Columbia,” in which Michael Collins was patiently orbiting the cold but no longer lifeless Moon.

1. Everyone knows that this was filmed at a drug running airport in Arkansas
That Clinton used to fly the dead bodies of his enemies out of the country and that Poppa Bush's private number found in the pocket of a Bigfoot that space aliens mistakeingly left on the tarmac in one of their missions to earth.

How's THAT for getting conspiracy theories together.

Edited on Tue Jul-20-04 08:06 AM by GOPisEvil
Just kidding. :D

The fact that this went from idea to execution in less than a decade will forever remain one of man's greatest achievements.

Now that Allen has edited the title, it makes my subject line look pretty fucking stupid! Damn you Allen! :P Kidding again.

3. My God...I remember watching the Moon landing.
Edited on Tue Jul-20-04 08:06 AM by terrya
Even at my age (13), I knew it would be history in the making. I had to see it. I remember Walter Cronkite, ardent champion of the space program, getting emotional when Armstrong set foot on the Moon's surface. It was an almost magical moment for me.

5. I was just turning 5 soon
I can still picture watching it on the little b/w television. My father worked for NASA for 35 years, so the space program was a big deal to us.

10. Stonewall was one defining moment in 1969.
The Stonewall riots were the kickstart to the modern gay rights movement as we know it today. Although courageous people like Franklin Kameny, Harry Hay and Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon were working hard for us years before Stonewall.

15. Judy Garland Died
Garland died June 22, 1969. New York's gay community was in mourning. In the 50's and 60's gays identified with Judy and her battles over booze and drugs. Her ups and downs. She was a true gay icon.

A group of drag queens organized a wake for Judy at the biggest gay bar in Greenwich Village, The Stonewall Inn. It was held June 27th. But, as "Over the Rainbow" played on the juke box, New York police raided the bar.

Raids were common at the time. But, this was a major offensive. The queens had had enough. Especially on this night.

One of them hit a cop. The cops went wild, and the Stonewall Riot began.

Edit: Woodstock was also in the Summer of 1969, I believe.

Son of Sam was in the 70's (I think '77).

14. I was 11 at the time.
I clearly remember watching on TV with my sisters. My dad got home from work and we all watched, just glued to the TV. What an exciting time. I remember we saw it on ABC. I can still picture Frank Reyonlds, Howard K. Smith and Jules (forgot last name) commenting and talking back and forth with the astronauts.

17. I Was Camping in Virginia With My Family
Dad had bought a portable TV for the camper at Sears just so we could see the moon landing - is was a B&W with a 9-inch screen and an AM/FM clock radio. We had invited the people i the sites around us to join us to watch, figuring we could put the TV on the picnic table outside.

Then it started raining.

As a result, we had 12 - 14 people crammed into our pop-up camper that night watching Armstrong and Aldrin. That may have been when I started developing claustrophobia....

18. I was about to turn 5
I don't have any recollection of this one...

Strangely enough, I do remember the Apollo 13 astronauts being pulled from the ocean after safely making it back to earth.

I guess those 9 months made a big difference in my ability to remember.

21. The whole neighborhood got together.
And gather around our BIG 27" color tv. I was five.

Us kids got pretty bored watching Walter, so we went out to play. Missed the landing, and I was in bed by the time they were on the surface.

I remember Apollo 12 better. I was in school, but we spent the whole day watching tv.

24. "Silent Satellite" by Tazin Archer
My take is that the song is whether it was all worth it and what affect it has on people. I guess having people exclaim "we can put a man on the Moon but we can't..." was one effect.

But my aunt told me her friends at work back in 1969 thought the government faked the whole thing just to tell the world they beat the russians to the moon.

32. It is true
trying to rid America of fascism just doesn't have same feeling as landing on the moon.
I remember watching, running outside to look at the moon running back inside to watch the TV, it was pretty amazing.
Maybe when we get rid of the fascists we can do great things for the planet.
