Book review: Carl Hiaasen's "Skinny Dip"
Edited on Tue Jul-20-04 02:57 PM by Richardo

Great! A real comeback from "Basket Case" and "Sick Puppy" which I found somewhat forced.

Mick Stranahan (the cop in "Tourist Season") makes a comeback appearance as the rescuer of a young bride who was thrown off a cruise ship by her "biostitute" husband, a barely-qualified marine biologist who is faking phosphorus readings in the Everglades for his polluting agricultural employer.

There's another in a series of barely-human, barely-sentient characters named "Tool", also, who is the souce of a lot of laughs.

Highly recommended!

From the publisher:
Clinging blindly to a bale of Jamaican pot, Joey Perrone is plucked from the ocean by former cop and current loner Mick Stranahan. Instead of rushing to the police and reporting her husband’s crime, Joey decides to stay dead and (with Mick’s help) screw with Chaz until he screws himself.

As Joey haunts and taunts her homicidal husband, as Chaz’s cold-blooded cohorts in pollution grow uneasy about his ineptitude and increasingly erratic behavior, as Mick Stranahan discovers that six failed marriages and years of island solitude haven’t killed the reckless romantic in him, we’re taken on a hilarious, full-throttle, pure Hiaasen ride through the warped politics and mayhem of the human environment, and the human heart.

3. Oh yeah...
He can come up with some freaks. What was that one where the guy got a weedwacker as a replacement for his arm?

5. I read "Native Tongue"
when I was in prison. Laughed my ass off. I can't really recall any of the character's names at the moment, but the "Dueling Press Releases" involving goings on at a Disney type park were hilarious. I have read his other stuff up to "Sick Puppy" but "Native Tongue" was what introduced me to him.

6. "Dueling press releases" was always what I called them, too
Funniest stuff I ever came across...

"Snakes, numbering 'in the low 100s'...."

HA! :D

7. The one thing I missed froim his last book "Skink"...
the former Governor of Florida (one term). And I hope I spelled his name correctly.

A wonderful character in Hiaasen's novels...but he wasn't in the last one.

But it's not a big quibble...I love Carol Hiaasen. :-)
