Come to the DU Happy Hour in Boston! -- Tuesday, July 27 (UPDATED!)
Edited on Sun Jul-25-04 03:53 PM by Skinner
Official DU Happy Hour!

We've finally made plans for an official DU Happy Hour in Boston for the Democratic Convention! We're gonna get together at Clery's -- Look for the folks in the DU T-shirts.

We'll try to get some munchies, but you gotta pay for your own drinks (sorry). Thanks to curse10, RationalRose, and WilliamPitt for their help picking out a place.

VITAL INFO

WHAT: DU Happy Hour

WHERE: Clery's, 113 Dartmouth St., Boston (South End), 617-262-9874

WHEN: Tuesday, July, 27, 2004 -- 6:00PM until ?
PLEASE POST IN THIS THREAD OR SEND ME A PRIVATE MESSAGE ASAP TO LET ME KNOW IF YOU PLAN TO BE THERE! We need to get a preliminary head count if we want to reserve one of their rooms.

Apparently, this place is easily accesible by the T, which is what they call their subway system up there in Boston. Parking is tough, so driving is not recommended.

DIRECTIONS: Take the T to the Back Bay station (which is on the Orange line). They tell me that Clery's is RIGHT THERE, just a 10-second walk from the station. The bar is on the corner of Columbus Ave and Dartmouth Street. If you are looking for alternative ways to get there, you may want to read this thread to read some of the other suggestions.

Here is the map from Mapquest.

Bring friends! It'll be a blast! Can't wait to get together with a bunch of DUers!

Back Bay subway stop plus 200 feet over to Columbus and Dartmouth (meaning south on Dartmouth to the corner which is Columbus and indeed is Clery's!)

2. CRAP!
I so wish I could make it. I stayed at a bed and breakfast not far from there in 2001, and loved the neighborhood.

You guys have a great time! And take lots of pictures!

3. I'm pretty sure that's at least partially during the Convention
So I'm not going to be there while the Convention is going. But once the Convention is done for the night, I may be an attendee.

4. Yes, there is conventioning going on that night.
Unfortunately, there was no perfect time, because there's stuff going on all the time at the convention. It seems like there are lots of events going on at the same time as the convention. We're hoping that people might want to split their evening between the DU Happy Hour and the FleetCenter. Plus, we figure there will be many people in town who won't have credentials for the convention anyway.

If you can come by before or after, we'd love to see you.

8. "Yes, there is conventioning going on that night."
Not that it's any of my business, as we'll be on vacation while the convention is in town (on purpose--sorry) but there's a great bar around the corner from the Fleet called "McGann's" that would be pretty convenient place if you're splitting time between a bar and the Convention.

Stellar Irish bar.

51. I didn't go to the state convention and I never
considered trying to be a national delegate - and I never regreted that decision until I saw this thread. Damn, I wish I could be there this sounds like the best DU gathering ever.

I'll be there in spirit. And DP - don't forget to tell the rest of the crowd how absolutely fabulous the Minnesota DUers are.

22. Me too jus_the_facts.
My only hope of getting from Virginia to Boston is through the generosity of some of our wealthier DU Members.

My husband will not let me fly, so I do not know if my only option is by bus (gulp, been over 30 years since I road a bus and the people were scary then), or limo. I would prefer limo services; however, I'm not trying to be greedy. Also, I only really like staying at the Hilton. Now I know that sounds greedy and you are probably thinking, "How did she get such rich taste if she is too poor to go?" Sometimes bad things happen to good people.

Remember the boom of the 90's, yep, me and my hubby were doing great. I had my own business and was started to subcontract work out. Then the bottom fell out. I am disabled now. We had to declare bankruptcy. It took over two years to get my back pay (which we owed to friends who had helped us out), and my monthly check of $894.00. I use to net at least $1500.00 a week easy.

As you can see, we lost an income so we had to go back to living week to week.

Anyway, I hope someone helps you out jus_the_facts. I was really kidding when I was asking for a free ride even though I would love to be there. However, being disabled now, I doubt I could keep up with the likes of you bunch (laughing).

Have a ball everyone, be sure if your T-Shirt has DU on the front, help the neocons and put a target on your back. Because I'm sure you will be approached and probably insulted. Give em Hell right back at them. Remember . . . no drinking and driving . . . have a DD.

Take lots of pictures and someone needs to video the party. That would be a blast to download and watch.

One last thing, are you guys going to invite Randi Rhodes? You ought to. That woman has to be the life of the party.

79. Travel hint

Check the last-minute fares on Southwest Airlines to either Manchester or Providence.

Both MHT and PVD are about 50 miles from Boston. Bus service is available from the airports to the South Station bus terminal. We're working on the commuter rail connection, but I have a feeling we won't get it built by next week ;)

20. John Hancock Garage is a bit high price-but right next to Back Bay Station
From the West Use the Turnpike (I90) and take the exit for the Prudential and when that exit ramp splits hang right to end up going toward Copley Square - just don't turn into the square -

Stay going straight in the same direction the turnpike exit lets you out into daylight. The first light is perhaps 200 feet from where you come out into daylight and is Dartmouth (a 2 way street) (you are a block North of Clery's at this point). The second light is Clarendon where you hang a right (it is one way) and go a couple hundred feet before taking a right into the Hancock Garage.

80. Don't even try to drive

I-93 is being blocked off at the Medford Square/Malden exit, and I suspect that it's something similar with the Mass Pike, the SE Expressway and the Tobin.

Find a T stop with a decent sized parking lot and take the subway into town. I often use the Wellington or Sullivan lots when I head into town. I believe Alewife, Braintree and Quincy Center also have parking facilities.

It's cheaper, and it will spare you an ulcer.

87. New plan: orange line from Wellington to Back Bay
All the advisories say that I-93 is open to Route 16 "for local traffic".
If that doesn't mean you need proof of local residence, then you
can come down 93 to Route 16, take a left, go two miles and
park in a major commuter garage on the Orange line. From there
its about 25 minutes to back bay.

Its my current favorite plan. I will be talking to co-workers who
live in Somerville and in Brookline to see how the evening
in-bound commute goes on Monday.

I'm going to be in Boston as a chaperone for our Teen Dems. There will be 15 kids aged 14-18 (who have been selling "No Bush" t-shirts that they designed themselves to raise money - very cool) and 5 of us grownup teenagers. We're doing volunteer stuff at the convention in the afternoons, then going to the convention (if we can get in) in the evenings.

I want to come, but I don't know that my schedule is going to allow it. Are teens allowed at this place?

69. 2 more
My sister and I are going to attempt to get there from CT. We have room for two more -- don't know what time we are leaving and it will either be from Colchester or Hartford. I am planning on the Green Line from Riverside from there I am not sure what do. Any suggestions are welcome.

73. Take the Green Line to Copley and Walk Down Dartmouth St
toward the South End (toward the Copley Place Mall). The bar is on the corner of COlumbus Ave and Dartmouth Street.

81. Or Back Bay/South End

The inappropriately named Back Bay/South End stop on the Orange Line is also in the neighborhood. It is across the street from the Westin and Marriot hotels in Copley Square.

no need to change trains.

76. Put me down as a firm maybe.
And I'll try to drag one or two friends along.

If I go, I'll be leaving the Newark Airport area and chugging through Westchester and CT via 684 and 84 if anyone needs a ride.

Anybody out there know if there's a Park&Ride somewhere off the MassPike on the way into town before the expected hellacious mess? I've seen trains when I've driven up there, but I have no idea how to get to them.

77. There's quite a few of them off the Pike
they correspond with Commuter Rail lines. I know there's a fairly large one off of 128 where the Amtrak stops (University Ave). Here's a link to our local transit system. If you click on Commuter rail they would have parking information.

86. I'm going to TRY to get there.
The problem arises in that I live on the North Shore, and access to Boston from that part of the state is very, very limited, particularly after 4pm. I may end up like Charlie on the MBA, but I really want to come.

I'm volunteering with the DNCC at the airport on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday, and will need to come home and feed my feline employers, but will get there, if & as soon as I can.

My brother Jonnyblitz is probably already there, getting together with everyone. I wish I could be there, but unfortunately, my work schedule is pretty much 84hrs/week.

I really would like to hang with our fellow DU-ers...the last time was in DC last fall...
