what city does it take place in it?

I see bits of Europe, maybe America, but it's never mentioned from what I can tell. America is mentioned with a couple winning tickets as well as Europe..but where Wonka's factory is, is the same city Charlie lives in, which is.....??????

It was filmed in Munich, but the producer, David Wolper, said that the movie deliberately obscures that question. It does have kind of a European feel though.

4. Charlie's supposed to live in London

but the Wonka factory is actually a US Army base in Germany.

5. I figured that was the case, being non-descript and all...

but I was still stumped trying to figure it out.

Edited to add : I still think it has one of the happiest endings of all time.
