Poll question: Which Filmmaker would you like to pal around with? |
|
Lets go with the ones that still have a pulse.
*I only wish that Kubrick, Hitchcock and Huston were still around.

though would consider Mike Moore if he would've been on your list. Not because he did F-9/11, but because I would love to pick his brain on the idea of documentary storytelling. Politics would be the bonus

if you're talking about "This is Spinal Tap"
Penny Marshall isn't listed anywhere as a producer. Her ex-husband, Rob Reiner, directed it though.

39. As a journalist, I've spent quality time with most of the big ones... |
|
Naturally, I don't equate the interview process with "palling around"---it's work for both interviewer and interviewee. But I've gotten a pretty good taste of their personalities and how they might actually be with the real friends in their lives. Here are some observations:
Cameron Crowe and Ron Howard are genuine sweethearts. Real nice guys. Scorsese talks faster than any human I know and is a joy to talk obsessively about film with. Hard to finish a sentence when you're talking to him as he's already two steps ahead. Can be distressingly impatient. David Lynch is shy, dreamy, Midwestern and weird. Prone to non-sequiters. No Hollywood attitude (of course, he's not actually from this planet.). Coppola can be self-conscious and uncomfortable---it takes a good bit to earn his trust. Ultimately, he's a cynic with a bit of a martyr complex. Spielberg's surprisingly down-to-earth, polite and friendly---but he (and you) never forget that he's a Hollywood god. Woody Allen is self-effacing, dryly humorous, and skeptical about your motivations. Tarantino is perpetually enthusiastic and nervous. It's clear he's got a shitload of buried issues. The Coen brothers are shy and seek refuge in one another. They have a compelling, if distancing, "brother" thing going on. George Romero is a rock-solid Pittsburgh homeboy whose personality doesn't at all match his horrific visions. One of the few directors who doesn't "seem" like a director. Mike Leigh is EXTREMELY touchy and a bit too arrogant for my liking. I think he's a brilliant filmmaker, but his disdain for those he thinks don't understand his accomplishments (like, say, journalists) is palpable. Peter Greenaway, whose work I much admire, is cold, cerebral, highly intellectual and quite arrogant. He's got zero tolerance. He's just no fun at all. He makes Gore Vidal look like Barney the Dinosaur.
Okay, that's enough for now.
