He's smiling, he doesn't think he's disgusting at all!

I bet he LOVES those carbohydrates, tho! My cat would eat bread and cereal if given a choice between that or fish.

I gotta keep her on a "Catkins" diet:bounce:

My ex had a cat that he left in "care" with some friends while we got settled in SF.

When he went to get her, she was HUGE. She never lost the weight. People think "oh it's so cute" when they feed dogs and cats human food.

It's bullshit.

24. Man...and I thought our Ragdoll, Cuddles, was big.
He was a chubby 17 pounds. Then my friend gave me a kitten, Ginsberg. A couple months later, Cuddles was 15 pounds. The vet was concerned, ran a few tests, everything came back fine. Then, we realized it was because he had previously lived in a "triangle" for 8 years...food, litterbox, couch, repeat. The oldest cat, Midnight, would decide to attack him once in awhile and that almost was exercise for him. Midnight is 9 pounds of sheer territorial dominance. None of the pets fuck with her. Of course, Cuddles being lazy and having a massive amount of thick protective fur, would walk slightly quicker than normal for about 5' then just let Midnight pin him. After a few minutes, she would walk away triumphant with claws covered in giant tuffs of "cottonball" fur and a mouth full of the same. Cuddles would then take a nap.

Well, Ginsberg was (and is) a never-ending ball of energy. It was all expended either chasing/playing-fighting Cuddles, chasing/being chased by the German Shepherd, or running away/hiding from Midnight. A kitten turned out to be the only effective diet for Cuddles. They're best friends now. Cuddles, Ginsberg, and Cheyenne (the dog) often sleep together. Ginsberg still expends a lot of energy running from Midnight, even though he's now about 11-12 pounds of pure muscle.

I always say that Midnight has the best life of all the pets. She takes no shit & commands immediate respect upon entering the room/going outside (even though she's by far the smallest, except for the Yorkie next door...she stares her down through their glass door). Apparently, she also has an endless supply of lives, which always comes in handy.

I'd post pics of everybody but I don't have a photo host.

25. Jesus Christ that's animal abuse...(RANT!!!!)
its not anymore cute than 1,000 lbs men and women, just sad. Even sadder that they are in the care of someone else. I have cats, and I'm concerned about their weight and they weigh about about 9-10 lbs each. Can that cat even support its own weight? There is no excuse for endangering the health or safety of an animal for "Cuteness", hence the reason I don't approve of declawing either.

Do you have any idea how bad that is for their health?

but I'm gonna second what I've read here: it ain't healthy.

Our Clarissa Marie weighs about 12 pounds. ThunderKat, when he was alive, was fat. We had to put him on a special food. We never fed him scraps, we did free feed them both, though and he ate his share AND Clarissa's share (mystery of the fatness solved!). My husband called him the Pig Cat.

30. hate to be a buzz-kill, but
any1 that owns a cat of that girth needs to be *very* aware of the danger their animal is in.

any slight illness that causes a temporary loss of appetite will almost inevitably result in a renal crash & consequential jaundice ending in an unstoppable, excruciating death.

a little "pudding" on a cat's tummy is usual, esp in neutered animals, but grotesque obesity in these animals is a sure sign of uneducated & selfish neglect.

31. addendum to my buzz-kill
if your cat has weight problems, there are some remedial actions available:

NO people food; cheese, milk/cream, table-meat.

minimize canned food, & only feed 1ce per day.

"hairball" type dry food is enriched w/fiber, helping to void unnecessary calories. provide plenty of water to assist the fiber.

"gourmet", or better still, home-grown catnip stimulates activity & burns calories.

spend as much time playing & grooming your animal to counter the boredom that creates overeating. leash-walking is excellent, but remember that cats have "sprint" energy, they can't sustain long periods of activity.

don't leave dry food available @ all times; p/up the bowl in between periodic grazing sessions.

get your animal a playmate.

setup a bird/squirrel/chipmunk feed station where your cat can observe them. the entertainment value supplants the need to feed through boredom.

provide climbing perches w/scratch pads, no low level scratch areas.

when i bought this house, i screened (insect screening outside layer, hardware cloth inside layer for security) & roofed my back deck so they can safely get fresh air. there's an old oak 15' away. i hang suet, thistle feeders for gold finches, & scatter sunflower seeds for ground feeders; mourning doves, squirrels, chipmunks.

love the sound of doves.

the chipmunks have become much larger & are now bright red instead of rust-colored. cats spend hours watching them.

don't know if you're aware, but the "chatter", often termed "clicking", results from them tongue-fluttering a special scent gland in their palate used for hunting, so your guys were def stim'd by the display!

37. please allow me to use your post
since i can't edit my "tips" post.

indoor cats also love "cat salad"; before i mow, i trim fescue onto a large tray w/scissors, chop it slightly. they gobble it.

the grass helps them pass ingested hair, so less cat-yak. it also provides enzymes to facilitate digestion, and the fiber helps void unused calories.

TX++ for letting me step on your post; you're my bud!

40. What do you recommend for Boo?
Edited on Thu Jul-22-04 09:03 AM by apnu

He's just under 30 lbs.

I play with him and brush him daily. When I get home from work it's "daddy time" and he knows it b/c he jumps all over me the minute I get home. My wife plays with him and pets him through out the course of the day.

He has 4 catnip toys in the house and I refresh the catnip in them often.

I feed him twice a day totalling 2/3 a cup of dry food.

He eats special urniary tract food that's high in fiber.

He is intolarent of other animals and is instantly violent and murderous when any other animal is around (shelter cat) So additional pets are not an option.

He has several high perches and won't/doesn't use them at all. He likes that pillow in the picture quite a bit. The perches are near windows where there is a lot of life out side to watch -- he shows no interest in the outside world.

(on edit, pesky tense issues)

sounds like you've done nearly as much as you can. i suspect some cats, like some people, have very slow metabolisms & simply cannot lose weight.

prepare yourself for a short life for Boo, & love him as much as you can whilst he's w/you.

short walks on a leash may provide additional exercise, but some cats won't accept a harness.

if you have a porch/window sill where he can watch outdoor animals, set up a feed station. the "hunter" instinct may stimulate his metab. (oops, just noticed your mention that he doesn't climb. given his weight, i understand. landing from a perch wd really hurt his feet. maybe he cd tolerate a hamster cage, since he'd have no real contact w/the animal?)

chopped grass as a treat will increase his fiber intake & the enzymes may help him utilize his calories rather than store them.

i did have 1 cat w/ severe weight probs. i brought her weight down by medicating her w/ corticosteroids 1ce every 2 weex for 6 weex. she became much more active and lost about 8#s. CAVEAT: prednisone tastes awful, & may be hard to administer, unless you can "pill" coated w/ vaseline. my hands are damaged & i can't pill, so i obtained some inj c'steroids for ms. peggy. PM if you want a link.

NOTE: corticosteroids DO NOT affect cats like they do humans; there's no risk of bone loss through avascular necrosis, nor do they inhibit a cat's immune system. just don't dose Boo too often or too long.

Further: if Boo gets any sickness that causes him to stop eating for more than 24 hours, get him to the vet *immediately*, renal collapse will kill him very quickly.
