11. yep
have you ever seen Drunken Angel? It was Mifune's first film where he had a starring role. He played a Yakuza thug with tiburculosis who befriends a drunk doctor played by Takashi Shimura. It was directed by Kurosawa. One of the bleakest movies ever, but the friendship between the doc and gangster was amazingly well realized.

He had all those titles you speak of...

I never did get into comics much.

The art is cool though, I can appreciate the concept! :hi:

15. I have a rabid apetite for visual art of all stripes.
I studied Illustration in Art School and that increased my love of comics. My personal favorites are some japanese manga that aren't translated - its kind of cool to not know what the hell is going on. It becomes surreal!

17. Japanese comic art and animation is so beautiful...

I'm more old fashioned though, I think, and so I'm more attracted to ancient Japanese art... woodcuts, and paintings...

There are definite similarities between the old and the new styles of Japanese art...That fineness, finish and gorgeous attention to detail...

There's a great Asian Art Museum in Seattle in Volunteer Park, if you're ever there...
You can take a walk through time and see the progression of styles in Japanese art.

But I'm a student of psychology, not art, so my ability to discuss these things is limited... I'm sure to embarass myself in a conversation with someone of your artistic expertise and dilletante. :)

Do you like ukiyo-e (the floating world)?

Hokusai is the most famous proponent:

Anyway - if you make it out to NYC - the Met has quite the plethora of japanese woodcut prints - you'd love it.

They did a study and the japanese have been making what you could call comics (manga) for hundreds of years.

19. OOOOOH!!! Cool....

Gorgeous pictures, thanks for that eye candy!

I do have a postcard of the first Hokusai painting, although I think it is a little too dark for my tastes... I appreciate what it is saying about the nature of human mortality, but the skulls in the ocean and the canoes creep me out a little bit.

I love the second one, who painted that? I know I've seen it before, maybe at the museum I mentioned.

I would love to visit NYC someday. It's definitely in my future plans, thanks!
